The Edinburgh Award is an annual civic award presented by the City of Edinburgh Council to an individual who has made a positive impact on Edinburgh and gained national or international recognition for the city. Established in 2007, the award is made following public nominations.[1]
The recipient is presented with an engraved Loving Cup at a ceremony hosted by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, and their handprints are reproduced on a flagstone in the quadrangle of the City Chambers.[1] Crime writer Ian Rankin was the inaugural recipient.[2] Traditional musician Aly Bain was selected as the twentieth recipient in 2026, with the presentation ceremony scheduled for later in the year.[3]
Selection and presentation
[edit]Nominees must have been born in Edinburgh, have lived in the city for the previous 12 months, or have a substantial association with Edinburgh. Previous recipients of the Edinburgh Award, recipients of the Freedom of the City and serving politicians are ineligible.[1]
Nominations are invited annually from Edinburgh residents, with the recipient selected by the council's Civic Awards Committee.[4] The recipient's handprints are cast and reproduced in stone for installation at the City Chambers.[1]
