Duchess of Hamilton

The duchess of Hamilton is usually the spouse of the duke of Hamilton, but in one case is a duchess of Hamilton in her own right (suo jure). Duke of Hamilton is an extant title in the Peerage of Scotland which was created in 1643.

On 16 June 1622, just short of his sixteenth birthday, Arran married, in the presence of King James, Lady Mary [Mary Hamilton (1612/13?–1638)], daughter of William Feilding, Viscount Feilding (c. 1587–1643), soon to be created earl of Denbigh, and his wife, Susan Villiers (d. c.1655).
