Tibet Relief Fund is a UK based charity which supports Tibetan refugees and Tibetan communities in exile through practical grassroots initiatives in education, health, skills training, sustainable livelihoods, rights and culture.
Founded in 1959 in London within weeks of the 14th Dalai Lama reaching India, Tibet Relief Fund is the oldest UK based charity working with Tibetans and one the oldest international charities supporting Tibetans in exile.
History
[edit]In 1950, the remote country of Tibet, high in the Himalayas, was invaded by the People’s Liberation Army of China. Tibet was annexed after the Government of Tibet signed the Seventeen Point Agreement which the 14th Dalai Lama ratified on 24 October 1951 but later repudiated on the grounds that he had rendered his approval for the agreement under duress.
In 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama (Tibet’s spiritual leader) left Tibet to live in exile and work towards justice for his people. Over the ensuing years thousands of Tibetans have followed him into exile.
Founded in July 1959, shortly after the Dalai Lama left Tibet, Tibet Relief Fund has been working with Tibetans to develop sustainable futures, both in Tibet and in exile.
Since its foundation, Tibet Relief Fund has funded many vital projects covering a wide span of needs for Tibetan communities.
Projects
[edit]Tibet Relief Fund works with Tibetan refugees in India and Nepal. With well over 120,000 Tibetan refugees in these countries, most of their projects take place in there.
The charity is the primary funder of the Empowering the Vision Project which is based in New Delhi, India and strengthens Tibetan communities through youth empowerment including career services, workshops and training opportunities.
Sponsorship
[edit]Tibet Relief Fund has operated a sponsorship program for Tibetan children since the 1960s. The program has since expanded to include sponsorship of Tibetan elders, monks and students.
The charity provides grants and other essential support to Tibetan communities including clean water and water deliveries to facilities, furniture, electricity, food, classroom materials, healthcare and other necessities.
