Yves Francesco Jeanne-Maria Gaspar is a physicist and researcher whose work focuses on mathematical cosmology[1], general relativity, gravitational physics, dynamical systems[2], and the conceptual foundations of physics.[3][4][5] He is a Visiting Scholar at St Edmund's College, University of Cambridge, and has been a professor with the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Brescia, Italy.[6]
Education and career
[edit]Gaspar studied physics at the University of Liège in Belgium from 1990 to 1995, specializing in relativity and cosmology. He subsequently completed the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mathematics, Part III of the Mathematical Tripos, at the University of Cambridge in1997.[7] He received his PhD from Cambridge in 2002 under the supervision of physicist John D. Barrow. His doctoral research examined the late-time behaviour of Bianchi type VIII cosmological models and resulted in the thesis Late-time behaviour of General Solutions to the Einstein Field Equations.[8][9]
Gaspar has taught cosmology and astrophysics at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Brescia, including in its master's program in mathematics and physics. Since 2016, he has worked as a physics examiner and moderator for Cambridge Assessment International Education.[7][10]
In 2020, Gaspar became a Visiting Research Scholar at St Edmund's College, Cambridge, where he is currently listed as a Visiting Scholar.[11] His research has included cosmology and questions concerning randomness and uncomputability, including their implications for philosophy and theology.[4]
Research
[edit]Gaspar's early research concerned exact solutions of the Einstein field equations and the dynamics of homogeneous cosmological models. With John D. Barrow, he studied the late-time behaviour of Bianchi type VIII models, including whether chaotic behaviour occurring near an initial singularity persists during later cosmic evolution. Their findings were published in Classical and Quantum Gravity in 2001.[12]
Gaspar has also investigated complexity and unpredictability in gravitational systems. In Gravity and Complexity (2012), co-authored with Giovanni Acquaviva, he considered whether certain dynamical systems associated with the Einstein field equations could exhibit forms of unpredictability stronger than conventional chaos and whether some of their properties could be formally undecidable.[13]
In 2025, Gaspar published the book chapter The Problems of Modern Cosmology, the Fine Tuning of Constants and Parameters, and the Notion of Time, which discusses unresolved problems in cosmology and questions concerning time, fundamental constants, initial conditions, and the limits of mathematical approaches to physical phenomena.[14]
