Yusuke Obuchi (Japanese: 小渕祐介; born 1969) is a Japanese architect and academic. He was co-director of the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and joined the University of Tokyo in 2010.[1]

Education and career

[edit]

Obuchi studied architecture at the University of Toronto. After working at Roto Architects, he attended the Southern California Institute of Architecture and received a Master of Architecture from Princeton University.[1]

He taught at the University of Kentucky, the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Harvard University before joining the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, where he became co-director of the Design Research Laboratory.[1]

In 2010, Obuchi joined the University of Tokyo.[1] In 2013, the architectural journal GA JAPAN published an interview with him in an issue devoted to computation in architecture.[2]

In 2016, 10+1 published a discussion between Obuchi and Dominique Chen on computational design and artificial intelligence.[3]

Obuchi and Kengo Kuma were instructors for the University of Tokyo online course Four Facets of Contemporary Japanese Architecture: Theory. The course received the 2018 Architectural Institute of Japan Education Award for Outstanding Practice; the recipients were Kuma, Obuchi, Toshikatsu Kiuchi and Hiroo Oka.[4]

Work

[edit]

Obuchi and colleagues at the University of Tokyo developed the 99 Failures pavilion through the university's Digital Fabrication Lab. The project was published in GA JAPAN in 2014.[5]

In 2021, Obuchi's laboratory at the University of Tokyo contributed a digital fabrication system to Wetland, the United Arab Emirates National Pavilion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale. The system was used in the on-site assembly of approximately 2,500 components. The pavilion received the Golden Lion for Best National Participation.[6]

In the same year, GA JAPAN published a discussion between Obuchi and structural engineer Jun Sato on machine-human collaboration in construction.[7]
