Yaser Ali is an American attorney and author whose work focuses on estate planning, tax planning, charitable planning, and Islamic inheritance law. He is the founding attorney of Yaser Ali Law, an estate and tax planning firm based in Tempe, Arizona. Ali co-authored Estate Planning for the Muslim Client, a practice guide published by the American Bar Association in 2019.[1]
Education
[edit]Ali received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida in 2008. He earned a Master of Education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2009 and a Juris Doctor from the UC Berkeley School of Law in 2012, where he was a member of the California Law Review.[2]
Ali has also studied Islamic jurisprudence and Islamic inheritance law. Some public biographies state that he has memorized the Quran.[3]
Career
[edit]After law school, Ali served as a judicial law clerk to Judge Damon J. Keith of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He later practiced commercial litigation at Osborn Maledon in Phoenix, Arizona.[2]
In 2015, Ali founded Yaser Ali Law, an estate planning law firm based in Tempe, Arizona.[4] His legal work has included estate planning, trust planning, tax planning, charitable planning, and planning for Muslim clients seeking to incorporate Islamic inheritance principles into U.S. estate plans.[4]
Ali has been listed as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers in estate planning and probate.[5] In 2021, Super Lawyers published a profile of Ali discussing his work at the intersection of estate planning and Islamic inheritance law.[6]
Islamic estate planning
[edit]Ali has written and presented on the use of Islamic inheritance principles in American estate planning. In 2019, the American Bar Association published Estate Planning for the Muslim Client, which Ali co-authored with attorney Ahmed Shaikh.[7]
Ali has presented programs on Islamic estate planning for legal and community audiences, including presentations associated with Zaytuna College and other Islamic educational institutions.[3] His work has addressed the relationship between Islamic inheritance rules, state probate law, trust drafting, beneficiary designations, and federal transfer tax planning.
