Woke 1.0 (or simply, Woke 1) is a term used to describe the peak period of relevance for social justice and progressive language talking points, often described as being between 2018 and 2021. The phrase was coined by New York City Council Member Chi Osse in May 2026, and used by U.S. representative for New York Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in August. [1] Woke 1.0 is often criticised for being too focused on Identity Politics instead of issues related to class. Woke 2.0 or Dark Woke is also sometimes comparatively used and described as more relevant to class, and peaking in the second presidency of Donald Trump. [2]
