Witness is a discrete-event simulation and continuous simulation software package developed by the Dutch engineering consultancy Haskoning. First released commercially in 1986 by the British firm Istel, it is used to model manufacturing and service processes in order to analyse throughput, capacity, and resource utilisation.[1][2]

History

Witness derives from SEE WHY, a visual interactive simulation package written in Fortran 77 and released in 1980 by BL Systems (later AT&T Istel), a subsidiary of British Leyland. SEE WHY has been described as the first commercially available visual interactive simulation software.[1] Witness was launched in 1986 as a simulation system for the IBM PC, adding a model-definition layer over the SEE WHY engine.[1]

Lanner Group Ltd was formed in 1996 through a management buyout of AT&T Istel's simulation business and continued development of the software.[1] In January 2019, Lanner was acquired by Royal HaskoningDHV, now known as Haskoning.[3]

Features

Witness models systems as configurations of elements such as parts, machines, buffers, conveyors, and labour, using both discrete-event and continuous simulation; the latter supports processes such as fluid flow.[2] Models can be displayed in two- or three-dimensional views, and an experimentation module runs replications of scenarios with varied input values for comparison.[4] The software exchanges data with Excel spreadsheets, SQL databases, and CAD drawings, and a related simulation engine, L-Sim, has been used to execute BPMN models within business process management tools.[2][5]

Applications

Published studies have applied Witness to a range of operational problems, including brewing process modelling,[6] healthcare system analysis,[7] contact-centre staffing,[8] and environmental assessment of container port operations.[9]

The software has also been used in teaching simulation at universities and is the subject of an independently published textbook, Witness 27 Simulation Modeling: Rational Process Design by Neil Murray.[10]
