Wimal Sockanathan also spelt as Vimal Sokkanathan was a Sri Lankan broadcaster, journalist, writer, reporter, radio personality, and lawyer.[1] He was widely acknowledged for his proficiency and eloquence in Tamil.[2] He spent the latter part of his life in London, England.[3]
Career
[edit]Wimal began his broadcasting career at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. During his tenure serving at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, he produced and presented several programs, especially catering towards the wellbeing of children.[4] He also featured as an actor in the Sri Lankan Tamil-language film Naan Ungal Thozhan.[5]
He later embarked on a journey to London in order to pursue his higher education in the field of law. Despite his career ambition of becoming a lawyer, he continued to hone his skills in broadcasting, which he considered his passion.[4] He joined BBC's Tamilosai and worked as a newsreader, and he worked predominantly during the vacation and weekends. After the discontinuation of BBC Tamilosai in 2017, he joined the International Broadcast Centre as a news reader and presenter.[4]
He also volunteered to serve as a translator for young Tamil correspondents during his stint at the British Broadcasting Corporation. He gave advice and consultancy to a certain number of young reporters in terms of accurately translating English news copies, as the young reporters were struggling to use appropriate, valid choices of words despite their Tamil ethnicity.[4][6] He also reportedly received an invitation from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to train young Tamil journalists. He also contributed to writing and publishing articles as a weekly contributor to the Tamil-dominated outlets in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Sri Lanka.[4]
In May 2023, his book titled London (England) il irunthu Wimal was unveiled for public view in Jaffna and Colombo[7], and the book was a compilation of his weekly columns he had published in the Tamil daily Virakesari.[4]

Death
[edit]He died on 1 August 2023 at the age of 75 after sustaining injuries from a train accident in East Croydon station, London.[8][9] It was later revealed that he collided in a train accident after having departed from his home for a jog and body exercise.[10][11][4] London Ambulance Service was immediately rushed to the scene following the rail accident involving Wimal Sockanathan and all the rail tracks adjoining the East Croydon Station had been blocked ever since the incident was reported on the spot.
