Will Bowes is a Canadian film and television director, actor and singer-songwriter. He co-directed the CBC Gem comedy series Hey Lady! with Sarah Polley and Adriana Maggs. The series premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and Bowes, Polley and Maggs were nominated for a Directors Guild of Canada Award before winning the Canadian Screen Award for Best Direction, Web Program or Series in 2021.[1][2]
Bowes has also directed the television film Christmas Casanova, the documentary Home, and the feature film The Fallers. As an actor, he has appeared in film and television productions including Copper, Alias Grace, Spinning Out, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Women Talking. He has also released music as a solo singer-songwriter and as the lead vocalist of the Toronto soul-pop group Gold Complex.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Bowes studied in the Claude Watson arts program and at Etobicoke School of the Arts before completing the Radio and Television program at Ryerson University.[4]
Bowes developed an interest in filmmaking and music as a child. At age 11, he wrote and recorded the song "September Cry" in response to the September 11 attacks. The release received a national radio campaign.[3]
Career

[edit]Bowes is the lead vocalist of the Toronto soul-pop group Gold Complex.[3] The group released a self-titled EP in 2015, followed by its debut full-length album, New Soul, in 2019.[5]
Bowes subsequently released solo material, including the 2018 single "Mad at the World", which was profiled by Billboard Canada.[3] The song placed first in the Social Causes category of the 2018 International Songwriting Competition.[6] His debut solo album, Character, was released in January 2020.[6]
Directing
[edit]Bowes co-directed Hey Lady! with Sarah Polley and Adriana Maggs. Created by playwright Morris Panych and starring Jayne Eastwood, the series had its world premiere in the Indie Episodic program at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.[1]
Bowes, Polley and Maggs were nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series at the 2020 Directors Guild of Canada Awards.[7] In 2021, they won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Direction, Web Program or Series for the third episode of Hey Lady!.[2][8]
Bowes later directed the romantic television film Christmas Casanova. Originally released in 2023, the film was added to Netflix in 2025.[9]
He directed and shot the documentary Home, produced and created by Degrassi co-creator Linda Schuyler. The documentary examines homelessness and housing insecurity in Cobourg and Peterborough, Ontario.[10] The 43-minute film screened at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival in 2026.[11]
Bowes made his feature-length directorial debut with The Fallers, a dramatic thriller starring Georgina Campbell and Paul Gross. Principal photography took place in Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario, in 2025.[12]
