Waterproof drywall is a term for interior wall materials and systems designed to resist moisture or flood damage more effectively than conventional gypsum drywall. Most products described this way are more accurately classified as moisture-resistant or flood-damage-resistant rather than fully waterproof, and only a small number of wall systems are built to withstand direct, prolonged water contact without degrading or requiring replacement.[1]

Limitations of conventional drywall

Standard drywall has a gypsum core faced with paper. When wetted, the paper absorbs moisture and the core softens, causing loss of structural integrity and creating conditions for mold growth. As a result, flooded drywall usually has to be removed and replaced. Federal flood guidance classifies standard paper-faced drywall as unacceptable for use below expected flood levels.[1]

Moisture-resistant drywall

Moisture-resistant gypsum panels, sometimes called greenboard or purple board, are treated to slow moisture absorption and resist mold, and are commonly used in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. One such product is USG Sheetrock Brand Mold Tough, which pairs a moisture-resistant core with a mold-resistant facing.[2] Because these panels retain a gypsum core, they are not waterproof and will deteriorate under prolonged exposure or submersion.[1]

Fiberglass-faced gypsum panels

Fiberglass-faced gypsum panels replace paper facings with fiberglass mats to reduce mold susceptibility, since the mats remove the paper that mold feeds on. One such product is Georgia-Pacific DensArmor Plus, which uses fiberglass facings in place of paper.[3] FEMA recognizes non-paper-faced gypsum panels as flood-damage-resistant, meaning they can tolerate limited wetting and drying, although the gypsum core can still absorb water and panels may require removal after contact with floodwater.[1]

Cementitious and composite boards

Cement board and fiber-cement panels, made from cement and mineral fibers, do not disintegrate when wet and are classified as flood-damage-resistant. One such product is USG Durock, a cement backer board reinforced with fiberglass mesh.[4] Because of their weight and finishing requirements, they are most often used as substrates or tile backers rather than finished interior wall surfaces.[1]

Non-gypsum and removable wall systems

Some waterproof wall products are not gypsum-based. Rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) panel systems do not absorb water and are used in wet environments, basements, and other moisture-prone spaces. A subset of these are designed as removable panels intended to be detached so the wall cavity can be dried and the panels reinstalled after a flood rather than discarded, an approach consistent with wet-floodproofing guidance that favors low-level finishes which can be removed and replaced.[1] One such product is EnduraFlood, a removable panel system that replaces the lower portion of standard drywall with waterproof panels.[5]

Material selection

Material choice generally follows expected moisture exposure: standard drywall in dry interior spaces; moisture-resistant drywall in high-humidity rooms; fiberglass-faced gypsum or cement board in intermittently wet or flood-adjacent areas; and non-gypsum or removable systems for flood-prone lower walls and basements.[1]

Building codes and flood-resistant construction

U.S. building codes and FEMA guidance call for flood-damage-resistant materials below the BFE. FEMA Technical Bulletin 2 rates materials by their ability to withstand floodwater contact: standard paper-faced drywall is unacceptable, moisture-resistant drywall offers limited improvement, and non-paper-faced gypsum panels, cement board, and comparable systems are considered acceptable depending on installation and exposure.[1] The NFIP defines a flood-resistant material as one able to withstand direct and prolonged contact with floodwater, meaning at least 72 hours, without sustaining damage requiring more than low-cost cosmetic repair.[6]
