Victoria Marwa Heilman (born 19 February 1973) is a Tanzanian architect and educator. She is the co-founder and executive director of Tanzania Women Architects for Humanity,[1][2] a non-governmental organization teaching women construction skills to build environmentally friendly buildings,[3][4][5] and managing director of Alama Architecture.[6]
Biography
[edit]Victoria Heilman was born on 19 February 1973 in the Mwanza Region, Tanzania, before moving to Dar es Salaam as a child.[6][7] In 1996 she began studying architecture at the University of Dar es Salaam, graduating in 2001. In 2004, she left Tanzania to study in the United States to study architecture at the Catholic University of America.[8] While in the United States, she became involved with Habitat for Humanity.[9] After completing her master’s degree in 2006, she returned to Tanzania, working on community programs in Zanzibar City and Tanga.[9] She received a PhD in architecture from the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 2016.[2][8]
In 2010 or 2011, Heilman co-founded Tanzania Women Architects for Humanity (TAWAH),[7][8][10][11] becoming its executive director in 2023.[7] She received an Eisenhower Fellowship in 2016, which she used to expand TAWAH's projects and recruit new members.[11]
She taught at the School of Architecture and Design at Ardhi University between 2001 and 2018,[1][6][7] starting as a tutoring assistant.[12] Heilman founded VK Green Architects in 2012, renamed to Alama Architecture in 2020, an architectural firm which designs and constructs green buildings.[6][7] Heilman is a registered practicing architect in Tanzania and a member of the Architects Association of Tanzania, in addition to being a board member of the Tanzania Green Building Council.[8]
