Victor Pătrășcan is a Romanian stand-up comedian who performs in English. He has toured internationally with solo stand-up shows focusing on immigration, cultural differences, stereotypes and social issues.
Early life and education
[edit]Pătrășcan grew up in a small village in eastern Romania. In 2012, he moved to London, where he began performing stand-up comedy in English. His experiences as a Romanian immigrant later became a recurring theme in his comedy.[1]
Career
[edit]Pătrășcan began performing stand-up comedy in London in 2012. He became active on the British comedy circuit and later performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
In 2018, he presented his solo show The Trouble with Being Born Romanian at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The show explored themes including immigration, identity and cultural stereotypes.[2]
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Pătrășcan has organised and produced international comedy tours, performing across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North America, South America and Oceania.[1]
His work has been reviewed by publications including The List and Oslo Desk, and has been examined in academic research on migrant stand-up comedy.[2][3][4]
His touring shows include The Dirty Immigrant, Failing in Love, and Stand Up Comedy in Broken English.
Charity work
[edit]Pătrășcan has performed charity shows supporting humanitarian initiatives. He performed charity stand-up shows in Ukraine on two occasions. His first visit took place in 2022, when he performed in Ukraine together with Dutch comedian Fedor Ikelaar.[5]
In 2024, Pătrășcan returned to Ukraine for a charity comedy tour. The tour included performances in Kyiv and Lviv, with other comedians joining him, including Fedor Ikelaar and Swiss comedian Georges Degoumois. The shows raised funds for Ukrainian children affected by the war and other charitable initiatives.[6]
Public controversy
[edit]In April 2025, Pătrășcan was denied entry into Georgia while travelling to Tbilisi, where he was scheduled to perform stand-up shows. Georgian border officials cited "other cases envisaged by Georgian legislation" as the reason for the refusal. Pătrășcan said he believed the decision was connected to his political jokes and public comments, while the Georgian authorities did not provide further details.[7]
Comedy style
[edit]Pătrășcan's comedy combines observational humour, personal storytelling and audience interaction. His material frequently addresses immigration, nationality, religion, politics and cultural differences.
His comedy often draws on his experiences as a Romanian immigrant performing in English and explores themes of identity, belonging and cultural stereotypes. Academic research on migrant stand-up comedy has examined Pătrășcan's performances as an example of how comedians use personal experiences and humour to negotiate transnational identities and challenge stereotypes.[4]
