Comment: @Josedimaria: Thanks, I prioritised what I assessed to be independent secondary coverage rather than primary research. My understanding of WP:RS is that their format is not a disadvantage. Regarding the suggested links, my concern would be that they may be deemed not fully independent by other editors, so I am cautious about using them to replace the existing sources. The formats aside, are there any particular claims that you think still needs better secondary support? /Urbourbo (talk) 17:01, 15 September 2026 (UTC)
Comment: @Urbourbo: I don't know why you only use journals and PDFs as sources, articles like this, this and this are better. Jôhola 10:47, 10 September 2026 (UTC)
Comment: Thanks @Josedimaria: I have now added a couple of new sources (Baker, Brame, O'Brien) and citations in response to your concerns. Just let me know if there are any remaining claims where you feel the sourcing needs to be improved before accepting the draft. /Urbourbo (talk) 16:07, 8 September 2026 (UTC)
Comment: Meets WP:GNG but lacks enough secondary citations to support claim. There are lots of them on the web however. Jôhola 05:43, 4 September 2026 (UTC)
Comment: Five sources have now been added to support the notability case. /Urbourbo (talk) 20:09, 2 September 2026 (UTC)
Comment: Thanks @WeirdNAnnoyed: I have now gone over the draft again based on your feedback, adjusting the language and trimming the length to about half, and also adding the new MacCallum source. I hope this resolves your concerns. /Urbourbo (talk) 11:55, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
Comment: Serious WP:PROMO issues with this article on a rather ordinary lawn-care machine. While Ref. 1 might be solid, the others seem like trivial, non-noteworthy developments (e.g. Redexim expanding its portfolio, Ref. 5) mentioned just to pad the reference list. We need significant coverage in reliable sources and ideally a non-promotional tone. WeirdNAnnoyed (talk) 23:28, 5 August 2026 (UTC)

Verti-Drain (or Vertidrain) is a tractor-mounted deep-tine aerator used in turf management to relieve subsurface soil compaction.[3][4]
The machine was developed in the Netherlands around 1980 by Arie-Jan de Ridder and an engineer associated with his company.[5][6] It was introduced into Britain during the early 1980s and later became widely used in golf-course maintenance.[7][5]
History
[edit]The Verti-Drain was developed in the Netherlands by the de Ridder family as a mechanical version of a traditional turf-maintenance technique in which a fork was inserted into the ground and then levered back to loosen compacted soil.[7] It was designed to emulate the "raise forking" method used on Dutch golf greens.[7] The development formed part of a broader move towards deeper mechanical turf cultivation.[6]
Shortly after its development, Cees de Bree became involved in the machine's international distribution and later co-founded Redexim, which subsequently became its manufacturer.[5][8]
The machine was introduced to the United Kingdom in the early 1980s, where adoption came initially through professional grounds-maintenance contractors after an initially difficult introduction,[7][1][5] while the first sale to a non-contractor was to Ascot Racecourse.[1] By 1989, the Verti-Drain was in regular use at St Andrews.[7]
Charterhouse Turf Machinery was established in 1982 partly to distribute the Verti-Drain in Britain and subsequently became its British distributor.[1] Redexim became a shareholder in Charterhouse in 1993 and acquired the company in 1997.[1][9]
Technology
[edit]The Verti-Drain is intended primarily to relieve compaction below the depth reached by conventional punch-action aerators. Its tines penetrate the soil and apply a heaving or kicking action that cultivates and fissures the soil below the surface.[3][4][10] The penetration depth and degree of lateral movement can be adjusted according to soil conditions.[11]
Reception
[edit]A 1987 report in The Golf Course presented the machine as an effective deep-aeration tool because of its ability to penetrate compacted ground and create subsurface cracking without severe surface disruption.[11]
In 1989, Turf consultant Jim Arthur described the Verti-Drain as a "very valuable" tool, while rejecting the view that it solved all compaction problems.[7]
A 1994 report by United States Golf Association agronomist Patrick O’Brien summarized research at the University of Georgia in which Verti-Drain treatment produced physical changes deeper in the soil profile than hollow-tine coring, while coring was more effective near the surface.[12]
A 2017 review of the history of turf cultivation in the International Turfgrass Society Research Journal discussed the Verti-Drain among more recent cultivation technologies, noting its ability to penetrate more deeply than standard aeration equipment.[13]
