Vasileios Samourkas (born 29 September, Lamia) is a Greek theatre director and actor.

Biography

He was born in Lamia. In 2017 he graduated from the Acting Department of the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece[1]. In 2018 he moved to Russia for his studies[1]. In 2024 he graduated from the Directing Department of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts – GITIS[2] (supervising professors Yevgeny Kamenkovich and Dmitry Krymov), specializing in theatre directing. His studies were funded by a scholarship through the Russian House in Athens (Russian Cultural & Scientific Centre) – a Russian state programme financed by the federal budget of the Russian Federation[1].

Career

In 2023 he took part in the IV laboratory "ARTHUB" of the Moscow Art Theatre "A. P. Chekhov", where he presented a draft production of "Odysseus Descends into Hades" based on the Nekyia (Book 11 of Homer's Odyssey)[3][4].

In 2024 he presented his graduation production — Euripides' tragedy "Medea" on the Main Stage of the Moscow Drama Theatre "M. N. Yermolova". This production was the first ancient Greek tragedy in the history of the Yermolova Theatre[5][6]. The premieres took place on 18 and 19 April 2024[7].

In 2025, on the Main Stage of the Ryazan State Regional Drama Theatre, he staged Aeschylus' tragedy "Agamemnon" (premieres on 12, 13 and 14 September)[8][9][10][11]. This production was the first ancient Greek tragedy in the history of the Ryazan State Regional Drama Theatre[8]. Moreover, it was the first time in the history of Russian theatre that the tragedy "Agamemnon" was included in the permanent repertoire of a drama theatre[8][1][12].

In the same year, on the Main Stage of the Smolensk State Academic Drama Theatre "A. S. Griboyedov", he staged Euripides' tragedy "Electra" (premieres on 29 and 30 November)[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20].

In 2026, in the Gubernial Small Hall of the Moscow Provincial Theatre, he staged Aristophanes' comedy "The Frogs" (premieres on 16 and 17 April), with original music by Theodoros Abazis[21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33]. In the same production, Samourkas also appeared as an actor, performing the roles of "Not a Poet", Maria Callas, and the "Greek Son"[23][34].

On 24 April 2026, a reception was held at the Greek Embassy in Moscow in honour of the director and his productions. The Greek Ambassador to Russia, Ekaterini Xagorari, expressed her gratitude to Samourkas and the theatre companies[35].
