Vania Dimitrova is a British computer scientist and Professor of Human‑Centred Artificial Intelligence at the University of Leeds. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence in education, user modelling, knowledge capture, and intelligent learning environments. She has also led national initiatives on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in engineering and the physical sciences.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]imitrova obtained her PhD in Artificial Intelligence in Education from the University of Leeds in 2001. Her doctoral thesis, Interactive Open Learner Modelling, focused on adaptive learning systems and user modelling.[3]
Career and research
[edit]Dimitrova's research centres on human‑centred artificial intelligence, including the development of intelligent systems that support sense‑making, decision‑making, and learning. Her work combines ontological modelling, machine learning, and the analysis of user‑generated content.[1]
She has held senior leadership roles at the University of Leeds, including Deputy Head of the School of Computer Science and Co‑Director of the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Artificial Intelligence for Medical Diagnosis and Care.[1] The CDT is part of a UK-wide programme of 16 AI doctoral training centres supported by UK Research and Innovation, representing a national investment of around £100 million to train the next generation of AI researchers.[4] [5] [6]
Dimitrova has held international leadership roles in the field, including serving as President of the International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society (IAIED), an interdisciplinary organisation promoting research in intelligent learning systems.[7]
She has chaired major international conferences including ACM UMAP, AIED, ECTEL and ICCE, and has served on editorial boards such as the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education and IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies.[8]

She has also been involved in nationally funded research initiatives examining the use of artificial intelligence in doctoral education, including a £3.4 million project supporting AI use in postgraduate research.[10]
Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)
[edit]Dimitrova is one of the two academic leads of the national Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Hub+ (EDI Hub+), funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The EDI Hub+ brings together multiple universities to address structural inequalities in engineering, physical and mathematical sciences.[2]
The EDI Hub+ is part of a broader national strategy to improve inclusion in STEM fields and foster equitable participation across research communities.[11][12][13]
She has contributed to national and international discussions on inclusion in science, including presentations at the Royal Society of Chemistry Inclusion and Diversity Forum.[14]
Her work has also contributed to broader policy discussions on artificial intelligence and education in European contexts.[15]
