VC Unlocked
[edit]VC Unlocked is an investor-education program run by the Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm 500 Global, formerly 500 Startups. 500 Global describes VC Unlocked as a program that teaches venture capital fundamentals.[1] [2] Its original and flagship edition is VC Unlocked: Silicon Valley, an invite-only, two-week, in-person program held on the Stanford campus in partnership with Stanford University. It target audience isemerging venture capitalists, corporate venture investors, angel investors, family offices, and government and institutional funds.[1] [2] 500 Global has run shorter, regional editions run under the same VC Unlocked name in other locations.
History
[edit]500 Startups launched the program as a pilot in May 2015 under the name "The Investor's Guide to Silicon Valley Investing" (IGSVI). The pilot has been tied to the firm's managing partner Bedy Yang, who has been credited within 500's own materials as the program's creator.[3] [4]
After that first cohort, the firm rebranded the program to VC Unlocked. One or two subsequent editions used the name "VC Unlocked: Secrets of Silicon Valley Investing" before the firm settled on "VC Unlocked: Silicon Valley." [3] [4] Counting the original IGSVI pilot, the 2026 program is the thirteenth edition of the program.
The parent firm rebranded from 500 Startups to 500 Global in 2021. [5] [6] By 2019, 500 stated it had educated more than 400 aspiring VCs and angels through programs with the Stanford Center for Professional Development, UC Berkeley, INSEAD, and its own team.[3] Later company materials cite larger totals, including "over 450 emerging investors from 240+ venture firms" and, in the broadest count, more than 1,200 investors trained across more than 50 programs in 10 countries.[7] [2] These figures are self-reported and described by the firm as internal estimates that are not externally verified.
Stanford partnership
[edit]The flagship edition is co-delivered with Stanford. Early cohorts ran with the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD). That entity was later renamed the Stanford Engineering Center for Global & Online Education (CGOE), which operates Stanford Online.CGOE and 500 Global jointly deliver the program annually on the Stanford campus, and participants who complete it earn a Certificate of Achievement issued by Stanford University’s CGOE.[7] [2]
Named Stanford faculty tied to the program include Trevor Loy, a Stanford lecturer and managing partner of Flywheel Ventures, and Michael Lepech, an associate professor in Stanford's School of Engineering.[8]
Format and curriculum
[edit]VC Unlocked: Silicon Valley is an in-person, project-based program held over two weeks on the Stanford campus. Some virtual editions ran for three weeks.[1] [9]
Per 500 Global and Stanford program pages, the curriculum centers on four areas: defining an investment thesis with feedback from Stanford faculty and 500 partners, learning 500's investment playbook (covering fund structure, returns, cap tables, valuation, term sheets, deal flow, portfolio construction, and raising from limited partners), applying 500's evaluation playbook by assessing real 500 portfolio startups, and building a network within the alumni community.[1][2] A recap of the 2017 cohort described the first week as more academic and the second as applied, with investment-committee simulations and valuation and M&A case studies, and reported that 78% of that class said their investment thesis had changed over the course of the program.[8]
Admissions and tuition
[edit]The program was originally application-based. In 2019, for its sixth cohort, it moved to an invite-only, nomination-based model, and 500 states that it does not accept self-nominations. Candidates are generally expected to have around one year of experience in angel investing, venture capital, or fund management, or about five years as an operator, and are typically referred through the 500 network.[3][1]
Scholarships and diversity
[edit]500 has emphasized diversity within the program. In its 2019 account, the firm stated that since 2015 about 33% of alumni were women and more than 61% were international, from 64 countries, and that it had funded more than 50 scholarships for investors from underrepresented backgrounds.[3]
Notable alumni
[edit]Pocket Sun and Elizabeth Galbut, co-founders of the venture firm SoGal Ventures, met through an early cohort of the program during the pilot program (IGSVI) in may 2015.[10][11]
Later fund founders profiled by 500 Global as program alumni include Azin Radsan van Alebeek (Emmeline Ventures), Shalanda Armstrong (100KM Ventures), Biola Alabi (Acasia Ventures), Emmanuel Adegboye (Madica), and Jamal Trotman (Radix Innovation Capital). These are documented through 500's own alumni features rather than independent press.[12][13]
Guest speakers and faculty
[edit]Across cohorts, guest speakers documented in 500's recaps and brochures have included Jason Calacanis, Mark Suster of Upfront Ventures, David Hornik of August Capital, Tim Draper of DFJ, Aydin Senkut of Felicis Ventures, Jeff Clavier of SoftTech VC, Judith Elsea of Weathergage Capital, Renata Quintini (Lux Capital, later co-founder of Renegade Partners), Will Poole of Capria, Marlon Nichols of Cross Culture Ventures, and Jeremy Liew of Lightspeed.[4][8] Program leadership and instructors have included Christine Tsai (500 Global CEO), Bedy Yang, and Paulina Szyrmer.[8]
Editions of VC Unlocked
[edit]VC Unlocked: Silicon Valley is the flagship edition with the most cohorts to date. 500 Global has also delivered the program under the VC Unlocked name in other formats and locations, including shorter versions of the same core program:
- VC Unlocked: Miami, a U.S. edition outside Silicon Valley.[14]
- VC Unlocked with INSEAD, an Asia-focused edition run with INSEAD's Global Private Equity Initiative.[15]
- VC Unlocked: Paris, a Europe-focused edition run in Paris in 2019.
- VC Unlocked: Deal Camp at Berkeley, a short program with UC Berkeley Law focused on structuring and negotiating early-stage deals.[16]
- VC Unlocked: Tokyo, a tuition-free program with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and JETRO. Per a company release, the first cohort was delivered in March 2024 with 33 participants, and a second cohort followed later that year.[17]
- VC Unlocked: AI Edition, a four-day San Francisco program on investing in artificial intelligence.[18]
- A shorter, four-day VC Unlocked edition run in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Sanabil Investments.[19]
- Self-paced online certificate courses under the VC Unlocked name.[20]
Other 500 Global venture-education programs
[edit]VC Unlocked sits within a wider family of 500 Global venture-education products. These are separate programs with different audiences and content, and are not editions of VC Unlocked:
- BAM (Boot Camp for Accelerator Managers), a one-week program for people running accelerators and incubators and for community managers.
- Angel Investing Unlocked, a separate program for angel investors, run several times as a three-day format, including in Riyadh with Sanabil Investments.
- Family Office Unlocked, a program in development that 500 Global had not yet run as of 2026.
Per 500 Global, VC Unlocked is the strongest and most frequently run of these products.[21]
Parent firm and its portfolio
[edit]500 Global, the venture firm behind VC Unlocked, was founded in 2010 as 500 Startups by Dave McClure and Christine Tsai and is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. McClure led the firm until resigning in 2017; Tsai became chief executive. The firm rebranded to 500 Global in 2021.[5][6]
As a venture firm, 500 Global reports around $2.3 to $2.4 billion in assets under management and says it has invested in more than 2,900 companies across more than 80 countries.[22][23] The following companies are investments made by 500 Global as a firm. They are not investments made by the VC Unlocked program, though participants study some 500 portfolio companies as case material during the course.
Notable 500 Global portfolio companies include the design platform Canva, valued at roughly $42 billion in late-2025 reporting; the Southeast Asian super-app Grab, which listed on Nasdaq in December 2021; the developer platform GitLab, which listed on Nasdaq in 2021; the cloud-communications company Twilio, which held its IPO on the New York Stock Exchange in 2016; and Credit Karma, which Intuit acquired for about $7.1 billion in 2020. Other frequently cited investments include Talkdesk, Udemy, Intercom, Bukalapak, Innovaccer, and Mejuri.[22][23][24][25] Estimates of the firm's unicorn count vary by source and date, ranging from roughly 33 to more than 50 companies valued at $1 billion or more. [23][24][25][26]
Notability note (for editors)
[edit]Independent, third-party coverage of VC Unlocked as a subject in its own right is limited. Most in-depth outside coverage that references the program does so while profiling individual alumni. Much of the program-level detail in this article, including the trademark, the product family, format, tuition, cohort counts, scholarship figures, and international editions, rests on primary or affiliated sources (500 Global and Stanford) and should be read with that in mind. Before publishing as a standalone Wikipedia article, editors should seek additional independent sources that treat the program itself as the main subject.
Additional affiliated and partner sources
[edit]These are useful for confirming facts but are all affiliated with the program (run, co-run, or funded by 500 Global or its partners). They do not count toward independent notability and should not be presented as third-party coverage.
