Until I Breathe was a Russian metalcore band formed in 2006 in Ozersk, Chelyabinsk Oblast, and later based in Moscow. The band was active until 2011 and released two full-length albums and one EP. Their work received coverage in Russian metal publications, including album reviews and interviews.
History
[edit]Until I Breathe was formed in 2006 in Ozersk. The band initially performed in regional venues and released early material online. Their debut EP, The Anatomy of Mind, was released in 2008.
Later in 2008, the band released their first full-length album, Genocide, through Chaotic Noiz, a subdivision of Soyuz Music. According to contemporary reviews, the album was recorded in the deathcore style and featured short compositions, heavy guitar riffs, and prominent drumming.[1][2]
In 2009, members of the band relocated to Moscow, where they reformed the lineup and began work on new material. Their second full-length album, We Are Here. Somewhere, was released independently in 2010. In an interview published by Fake Music Magazine, band members stated that the album was recorded without label involvement and reflected a shift toward a more melodic approach compared to their earlier work.[3]
The band disbanded in 2011 following changes in members' personal circumstances.
Musical style
[edit]Reviews described Until I Breathe's early work as deathcore, indicating influences from metalcore and extreme metal. Critics noted the combination of aggressive vocals, heavy breakdowns, and occasional melodic or instrumental passages, including piano interludes.[2]
In later releases, reviewers observed a stylistic shift toward more melodic structures and thematic cohesion, with lyrics addressing social and personal issues.[3]
Reception
[edit]Genocide received mixed-to-positive reviews from Russian metal publications. A review by Heavymusic.ru characterized the album as a strong debut with high production quality and effective drumming, while noting limited originality and low intelligibility of the vocals.[2]
Darkside.ru highlighted the album's heavy sound and instrumental sections but concluded that the band had greater potential if they refined their vocal approach.[1]
