CENTRO (officially CENTRO | Diseño, Cine y Televisión) is a private university in Mexico City, Mexico, focused on design, film, television, architecture, and digital media. It was founded in 2004.[1] In April 2025, it joined the international network Galileo Global Education.[2]
History
[edit]CENTRO was founded in 2004 by Gina Diez Barroso and Abraham Franklin, beginning operations with 19 faculty members and 82 students.[3]
In 2015, the institution relocated to a new campus on Avenida Constituyentes, designed by architect Enrique Norten of TEN Arquitectos. The campus covers 26,000 square metres across three interconnected buildings and was constructed to LEED Platinum standards.[1] Writing in Architect Magazine, critic Ian Volner situated the campus within an international trend in academic building design, comparing it with projects by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in New York and NADAAA at the University of Melbourne.[4] The campus was also covered by Wallpaper*.[5]
Academics
[edit]The institution offers undergraduate and graduate programmes with Official Recognition of Validity of Studies (RVOE) from Mexico's Secretariat of Public Education (SEP). Its Centre for Research in Creative Economy (CIEC) publishes the peer-reviewed journal Economía Creativa (ISSN 2395-8200), indexed in Redalyc, Latindex, and Dialnet.[6]
Faculty members affiliated with the institution have contributed to international academic publications, including the Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Design (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2015)[7] and the volume Beyond Speculative Design (Arts Academy, University of Split, 2021).[8] A student design project developed in collaboration with Santander bank was presented as a case study at the 21st DMI Academic Design Management Conference in London (2018).[9]
Dezeen has featured student work from the institution in its School Shows series.[10][11]
