Unity, Maryland was a farming community in Maryland. The Griffith farm in the area had slaves. An African American community settled in the area where Enoch George Howard owned land.[1]
Beale Gaither sold him his freedom and he was also able to purchase his wife's freedom in the early 1850s. His wife Harriet bought their five children out of slavery from Samuel R. Gaither.[2]
Patuxent River State Park occupies lands once owned by Howard and the family cemetery.[2][3]
