Umesh Pant (born 20 July,1988) is an Indian Hindi-language author[1][2]and journalist[3]. He is the author of travelogues Innerline Pass (2016), Door Durgam Durust (2020), Chhani Kharikon Mein (2026), and a poetry collection Zehan Ka Pairahan (2024). He has also written around 50 audio stories for the radio shows Yaadon Ka Idiot Box seasons 1 to season 3 on 92.7 BIG FM, and The Neelesh Misra Show on Red FM.[4]

Early life and background

Pant was born in Gangolihat, Pithoragarh district, in Uttarakhand.[5] After completing his schooling from Pithoragarh, he graduated from A.J.K. Mass communication research center, Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi.

Career

Journalism

Pant has been writing for media publications since 2006.[6] He has written numerous articles and reports for various publications including Uttaranchal Patrika, Dainik Bhaskar,[7] Dainik Jagran, Rashtriya Sahara[8], etc. on diverse issues.

In 2012, he became one of the founding members of Gaon Connection, an Indian rural newspaper, and wrote extensively for the paper as its Roving Editor.[9][10]

Fiction

He is also a founding member of Mandli, a writers’ collective, and with it has written around 50 short stories for the radio show Yaadon Ka Idiot Box for its seasons 1 to 3 on 92.7 BIG FM. This was followed by stories for The Neelesh Misra Show on Red FM.

A collection of these stories was published, along with other stories from the show, in the book Storywallah[11] published by Penguin India in 2018.[12]

Travel writing

Travel writing has been Pant’s primary calling.[13][14] He has authored three published travelogues — Innerline Pass (2017), Door Durgam Durust (2020), and Chhani Kharikon Mein (2026) and has also contributed to the travel anthology Safar Hamare (2021), published Kavyansh Prakashan.

In addition, he has conducted travel writing workshops in Delhi University and has spoken on travel journalism in literary festivals such as Sahitya Aaj Tak 2019[15] and 2022[16] in New Delhi, Dainik Jagran Samvadi 2019[17] in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and Almora Literature festival 2024[18] in Almora, Uttarakhand.

Literary works

Pant’s writing has captured his journeys across remote Himalayan regions in Uttarakhand and Northeast India.[19] He has written about his journey to Aadi Kailash (then without a motorable road) in Innerline Pass, and across five states in Northeast India in Door Durgam Durust. His most recent travelogue Chhani Kharikon Mein (2026, Rajkamal Prakashan) is based on a 500-kilometre journey on foot as part of the 2024 edition of the Askot Arakot Abhiyan, which is a decadal journey documenting sociological, environmental, and economic changes in Uttarakhand’s villages[20]. It is led by historian Shekhar Pathak and his team.[21]

In 2024, his poetry collection Zehen Ka Pairahan[22] was published by Shivna Prakashan.

Reception

Pant’s books have generally received positive reviews, starting with his debut Innerline Pass[26], which was included in the Best 5 Hindi Non-Fiction Books of 2016–17 by Femina. The book was described as an engaging travel narrative that evokes a sense of adventure and introspection[27].

Door Durgam Durust has drawn critical attention[28] and was also reviewed in the prestigious Hindi journal Alochana [29], which described it as “A literary journey that wipes away prejudices”. A reviewer in The Book Review magazine called it a “well-paced narration” and highlighted that a well-emphasised theme in the travelogue is women’s safety in Northeast India.[30]

Chaani Kharikon Mein too received similar attention. In a review published in Dainik Jagran, National Film Award-winning author and critic Yatindra Mishra, observed, “During this journey, the mountains witness significant social transformation. Environmental fragility is one of the book’s central themes. Interwoven throughout the narrative, the strings of mountain folk music bring life to the readers experience”[31]. Another reviewer in Dainik Bhaskar described it as “a book that captures the soul of the mountains”.[32]

Recognition

Pant was awarded the Antarrashtriy Katha Samman by the Dhingra Family Foundation (USA) and Shivna Prakashan in 2021[33] for his travelogue Door Durgam Durust.[34][35]
