Tropical Fractals (Portuguese: Fractais Tropicais) is a 2026 post-apocalyptic sci-fi film directed by Brazilian Filmmaker Leonardo Pirondi. A co-production of Portugal and Brazil, the film follows two parallel stories; The journey of Brazilian archivists aboard a biodome spaceship as they tend to humanity's last archive managed by an intelligent system named Museo and on Earth, a man roams a recovering planet in ruins.[1][2]

Pirondi's debut feature had its world premiere at the National Competition at the 23rd IndieLisboa International Film Festival on 7 May 2026,[3] followed by the international premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival in thematic strand 'Experimenta' on 12 October 2026.[4][5]

Synopsis

As humanity approaches extinction, a group of Brazilian archivists travels through deep space carrying the last surviving species from Earth and their digital replicas. The crew is accompanied by Museo, an artificial intelligence that stores their diaries and an archive of human history. The crew's journey is presented through their diaries and fragments of the archive. Meanwhile, on Earth, a person believed to be the last surviving human travels across the ruins of civilization. The planet is slowly recovering from the apocalypse.

The film was produced by the Portuguese production company Bam Bam Cinema,[6] based in Porto and received financial support from the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual of Portugal (ICA),[7][8] Galeria Mola Arte Contemporânea, Sundance Institute (Ignite Fellowship[9]), San Diego Underground Arts,[10] and IndieLisboa (Fundo de Apoio ao CInema).[11]

Tropical Fractals was shot entirely on Kodak color and black-and-white 16mm motion picture film, in the aspect ratio of 1.66:1 (Super 16mm), and the footage was developed at FotoKem Laboratory, in Burbank, CA. The film also features an excerpt from the novel Invisible Cities (Italian: Le città invisibili) by Italo Calvino.[10][12]

Tropical Fractals had its world premiere at the 23rd IndieLisboa International Film Festival in the National Competition section on 7 May 2026.[14]

It was also selected at the 33rd Chicago Underground Film Festival for screening on 25 September 2025, where it will have its North American Premiere.[15] It made it to the thematic strand 'Experimenta' of the 70th BFI London Film Festival for screening on 12 October 2026.[16][17]

On 14 October 2026 the film will be screened at the REDCAT Theater in Los Angeles.[18]

Reception

Susana Bessa of Senses of Cinema writes on her IndieLisboa festival report after an interview with the director that "it’s not common to come across an end-of-the-world film this hopeful" (referring to Tropical Fractals) and mentions the way in which the director explores a non-linear ambiguity of a film that mixes documentary, fiction, and ethnographic film genres while inspired by sci-fi films.[14]

Film writer Michael Sicinski argues that, Tropical Fractals, ultimately contrasts a "techno-colonial" response to ecological collapse with a restorative one, embodied by a lone wanderer who accepts his “fundamental place within the world, and not above it.” For Sicinski, if there is to be any future for humanity, it depends on precisely this kind of reconciliation with the nonhuman world.[19]
