TissUse GmbH is a biotechnology company based in Berlin, Germany. It develops microphysiological systems (MPS), including multi-organ-on-a-chip platforms for biomedical research, drug development, and toxicology testing. The company was founded in 2010 by Uwe Marx as a spin-off from the Technische Universität Berlin.[1] [2]

Technology

TissUse develops microfluidic multi-organ-chip systems under the HUMIMIC brand.[3] These systems enable the co-culture of multiple human tissue models connected through a shared microfluidic circulation system.[4]

The platform supports the integration of different human tissue models within a single microfluidic circuit, allowing controlled fluid-mediated interaction between tissue compartments. Published studies have described tissue combinations including liver, intestine, kidney, skin, bone marrow, lung and neuronal tissues.[5]

Applications

The HUMIMIC platform is used in preclinical research to investigate drug metabolism, toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and disease modelling using interconnected human tissue models. Applications reported in the scientific literature include studies of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME), systemic toxicity, and organ–organ interactions.[5]

History

TissUse was founded in 2010 with support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research through the GO-Bio programme.[6]

In 2013, the company acquired patent families related to multi-organ-on-a-chip technology from the Technische Universität Berlin.[7]

The HUMIMIC product line was introduced commercially in 2014.[8]

In 2019, TissUse obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification for its quality management system following an external audit conducted by DEKRA.[9]

In 2020, Reyk Horland was appointed Chief Executive Officer.[10]

The company collaborates with pharmaceutical companies including AstraZeneca, UCB, Boehringer Ingelheim, Sanofi, Servier, and Orion Corporation.[2]

Research

The Multi-Organ-on-a-chip system has been used in peer-reviewed studies to investigate organ–organ interactions, drug metabolism, toxicity, and disease modelling using interconnected human tissue models. Peer-reviewed studies have described multi-organ configurations including liver–intestine, liver–skin, liver–kidney, liver–lung, liver–bone marrow, and intestine–liver–kidney–neuronal tissue systems.[5] The platform has been used to study pharmacokinetic processes, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME), as well as systemic responses to pharmaceutical compounds and chemical exposures.[11] Published research has also described the use of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived tissues and patient-derived models in multi-organ microphysiological systems to investigate disease mechanisms and therapeutic responses in vitro.[5]
