Tiptap is a software company based in Berlin, Germany that develops text-editing products for web apps.

Tiptap's first product, the Tiptap Editor, is an open-source, framework-agnostic rich-text editor framework for the web. It is headless, meaning it provides core editing logic without a default user interface, giving developers full control over the UI design. Tiptap Editor is built on the ProseMirror editor toolkit – a well-established foundation also used by companies like Atlassian and the New York Times – to ensure reliable content editing.[1][2][3] The project was originally created by the team at the German design agency überdosis around 2018 and is released under the MIT License.

As of 2025, Tiptap evolved a broader suite of products including cloud document storage, real-time sync and collaboration, inline support for AI agents, DOCX conversion, and a range of commercial extensions for the Editor.

History

Tiptap began as the design agency überdosis, founded in 2015.[4] The Editor was initially a side project to support the team's need for a modern rich-text editor for Vue.js applications.[5] The first public version was released in 2018 as a renderless (no built-in UI) editor for the Vue.js framework. Drawing inspiration from the modular design of Slate.js (a React-based editor) and leveraging the flexibility of ProseMirror, the team built Tiptap as an easily-extensible editor without heavy dependencies.[6]

Tiptap gained significant popularity, accumulating over 9,000 stars on GitHub and more than 6 million downloads on npm by early 2021.[1][7][8] Notable adopters included developer tools and content management systems such as GitLab, Statamic, Craft CMS, ApostropheCMS, Directus, and Nextcloud.[9][10]

In April 2021, the developers released Tiptap 2.0 as a public beta. It represented a complete rewrite in TypeScript and was framework-agnostic: usable with React, Vue 2, Vue 3, and other ecosystems out of the box. Tiptap 2 introduced a richer extension API and first-class support for real-time collaboration.[11]

During v2's beta, the project's community and usage grew rapidly. So in late 2022, Tiptap's founders decided to focus on the project full-time, transitioning from the agency model to a dedicated startup, Tiptap GmbH. In October 2023 the company announced $2.6 million seed funding round led by Expa, with participation from Y Combinator and other investors. By that time, Tiptap had over 2 million monthly downloads and was used by content platforms like Substack and Axios HQ, as well as by engineering teams at GitLab.[12][9]

Tiptap 3.0 was released in 2025, with a beta in May 2025 and a stable release in July. Version 3 continued the extension-based design with a focus on performance and developer experience.[13] Notably, some features that were previously part of Tiptap's paid "Pro" extensions (such as drag-and-drop handles, emoji support, math typesetting, and file handling) were open-sourced.[14] Meanwhile, Tiptap's usage had again grown – the project exceeded 9 million downloads per month on npm by mid-2025,[8] making it one of the most widely-used rich text editor frameworks in the web development community.

Features and Architecture

Headless and Extensible Editor: Tiptap's Editor is headless, meaning it provides no default UI and is highly configurable. This allows developers to integrate it into their own experiences. Content-editing behavior is defined through a system of extensions (plugins) that can be mixed and matched. Over 100 official extensions are available for common rich text features (text styling, tables, images, links, etc.), and developers can create custom extensions to introduce their own functionality.[15] The editor's schema and behavior are derived from ProseMirror, which manages document structure as a JSON state; this gives Tiptap Editor a solid foundation for complex rich text capabilities (such as collaborative editing and history undo/redo) while abstracting away browser inconsistencies.[16] Tiptap's headless, renderless design means it imposes no styling or predefined toolbars, so it can be embedded in applications with complete control over the look and feel (e.g., to build editors resembling Notion or Google Docs).[17] The Editor is also framework-agnostic: although it originated with Vue, Tiptap now provides official packages or examples for React, Vue, Svelte, and vanilla JavaScript, among others.[18]

Real-Time Collaboration: Tiptap offers collaborative editing, allowing multiple users to edit the same document simultaneously with live cursors and conflict resolution.[19] Collaboration is implemented via a CRDT-based approach using Yjs. The Tiptap team provides an open-source WebSocket server called Hocuspocus to serve as a back end for real-time sync using Yjs. Developers can self-host Hocuspocus; or, Tiptap's managed cloud service offers greater convenience and additional functionality like comments and presence (seeing who's online and where their cursors are). The Yjs base also permits easy implementation of offline editing. Collaborative editing was a key focus in v2.0's development, making Tiptap "collaborative by heart" from that version onward.[20][21][22]

Cloud Services & Pro Extensions: In addition to Collaboration, Tiptap offers a set of cloud services and "pro" extensions to enhance the editor's capabilities: comments (inline and document comments for annotation and feedback), document conversion (importing and exporting to formats like Microsoft Word's DOCX, OpenDocument, or Markdown), and version history for content. Tiptap Cloud encompasses the cloud services with a hosted platform (with on-premise option) and centers on a "Document Server" for document hosting. The full set of advanced editor extensions falls under the Tiptap Pro label and is included with Tiptap Cloud.[23][24][25]

AI Toolkit: In 2025 Tiptap also added AI features to its portfolio. Tiptap's AI Toolkit serves as a bridge between developers' AI and their documents, making it easy for AI agents to understand, proofread, write, and edit Tiptap documents in place.[26]

All core functionality of the editor, however, remains open-source and can be used without the paid services.[27][24]

Adoption and Usage

Since its inception, Tiptap has been adopted by a variety of notable companies and open-source projects as the text editing component in their products. Early adopters of Tiptap 1.x included content management systems and developer tools such as Statamic, Craft CMS, ApostropheCMS, Directus, and the Nextcloud platform.[11][28][29] The DevOps platform GitLab integrated Tiptap to build a custom rich-text editing experience within its interface.[30] As Tiptap matured into version 2 and beyond, its user base expanded to startups and web platforms aiming to provide a polished document editor akin to Notion or Google Docs. For example, the newsletter platform Substack and the collaboration software Axios HQ have been cited as users of Tiptap for their rich text authoring interfaces.[12] Beyond end-user products, UI component libraries such as Mantine ship Tiptap as the basis of their rich text editor component.[31] Other platforms have integrated Tiptap as their built-in editor, including the headless CMS Strapi, the Laravel toolkit Filament, and the CMS TYPO3.[32][33][34] Tiptap was cited in Oxx's 2025 Rising Stars of Open Source report as an open-source project that had seen significant growth.[35] Tiptap is among the JavaScript frameworks used as real-world workloads in the Speedometer 3.0 browser benchmark.[36]

Tiptap has also featured in third-party developer conference talks, such as a presentation on integrating it with OpenAI and Vue.js at Vue.js Amsterdam.[37]

The project's popularity is further reflected in its community metrics. By 2021, Tiptap had over 6 million total downloads on npm.[8] Tiptap's GitHub repository has grown to tens of thousands of stars.[38][8] By 2026, downloads had grown to over 12 million per month on npm, making it one of the most downloaded JavaScript-based rich text editor frameworks.[8] Tiptap maintains a community Discord server and develops the project openly on GitHub.[1][39]
