Thomas Zimmermann is a computer scientist and academic researcher known for his work in empirical software engineering. As of January 2025, he is a Chancellor’s Professor and holds the Bren Chair at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).[1] Prior to joining UCI, he spent 16 years as a researcher at Microsoft.
Zimmermann is recognized for his contributions to mining software repositories, software defect prediction, and improving developer productivity and experience through the application of artificial intelligence in software engineering.
Career and research
[edit]Zimmermann's research primarily focuses on leveraging empirical data and artificial intelligence to understand and improve how software is built. From 2009 to 2025, he worked at Microsoft, where he conducted research on developer productivity, trust in AI, and software engineering practices at scale. In January 2025, he joined the University of California, Irvine as a Chancellor’s Professor and the Bren Chair.
He currently serves as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Empirical Software Engineering journal, a leading publication in the field. He is a frequent keynote speaker at major academic conferences, delivering keynotes such as "The Fellowship of Trust in AI" at MODELS 2024 and "The Incredible Machine 3: Developer Productivity and the Impact of AI" at FSE 2024.[2]
