Thomas Baudel is a French computer scientist and researcher specializing in human-computer interaction, information visualization, and digital ethics. He is known for his contributions to gestural interfaces, visualization grammars, and his work on operationalizing ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence systems. Since 2018, he has taught a widely followed online course on scientific integrity and digital ethics.

Early life and education

[edit]

Thomas Baudel began programming as a self-taught developer in the 1980s. He obtained his first professional position in 1986, providing technical support and consulting for 4th Dimension, a database management software.[1] During his studies, he developed custom applications for various clients, creating early customer relationship management (CRM) and accounting software for small and medium enterprises.

Baudel completed his PhD in computer science in 1995, focusing on the morphology of interaction under the supervision of Michel Beaudouin-Lafon.[2] His doctoral research explored novel interaction techniques using hand gestures for computer interfaces.

Career and research

[edit]

Early work and gestural interfaces (1986–1995)

[edit]

Baudel's early career combined consulting work with academic research. His PhD work on gestural interaction resulted in publications in prominent venues including Communications of the ACM[3] and the CHI conference.[4] This research contributed to the understanding of direct manipulation interfaces and gesture-based interaction.

3D animation and computer graphics (1995–1998)

[edit]

From 1995 to 1998, Baudel worked as a researcher at Alias|Wavefront (later acquired by Autodesk) in Paris, focusing on human-computer interaction for 3D animation tools. His work contributed to the development of Autodesk StudioPaint and Maya, particularly in the area of bimanual curve manipulation,[5] exploring how users could employ both hands simultaneously for more efficient 3D modeling workflows.

ILOG and visualization systems (1998–2012)

[edit]

In September 1998, Baudel joined ILOG as Principal Scientist, where he led research in human-computer interaction and information visualization. His work at ILOG spanned two major areas:

From 1999 to 2003, he contributed to the development of GUI toolkits, particularly ILOG Views, a C++ class library for building graphical user interfaces.[6]

From 2003 to 2007, Baudel worked on ILOG Discovery, a system for information visualization based on visualization grammars.[7][8] This work explored declarative approaches to creating complex visualizations, allowing developers to specify visual representations through high-level rules rather than procedural code.

Between 2007 and 2012, Baudel worked on applying visualization techniques to explore complex, rule-based, decision systems. In this context, he advised Bertjan Broeksema's PhD thesis [9] and coauthored several publications.

Computer music (1991–2013)

[edit]

Parallel to his professional work, Baudel developed HighC, a music creation tool designed to make composition accessible through direct manipulation and visual feedback. The project, which spanned from 1991 to 2013, explored concepts of synesthesia in music creation, allowing users to "draw" music through intuitive graphical interfaces.[10]

Smart cities and urban logistics (2010–2016)

[edit]

As ILOG was acquired by IBM, Baudel's research shifted into urban informatics and smart cities, particularly focusing on urban logistics optimization. He contributed to the OptimodLyon project, which aimed to improve logistics flows and optimize delivery systems in urban environments.[11] He presented this work as a keynote speaker at the IHM 2016 conference,[12] discussing how city information systems could be leveraged to address traffic and public works challenges.

Digital ethics and AI governance (2016–present)

[edit]

Since 2016, Baudel has focused on digital ethics and the operationalization of ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence systems. His research addresses the challenge of translating abstract ethical principles into concrete decision-making processes for AI systems, with particular attention to human oversight and accountability.[13][14] [15] [16]

He contributes to the development of harmonized standards supporting the European Union's AI Act through his participation in CEN-CENELEC Joint Technical Committee 21, Working Group 4, which develops technical standards for AI systems.[17]

Teaching and education

[edit]

Baudel has taught at several French universities throughout his career:

In the 1990s and 2000s, he taught GUI programming and human-computer interaction at ESIEE, Université Paris Dauphine, Université de Poitiers, and Université Paris-Sud (now Paris-Saclay University). His courses covered topics including X-Windows programming, object-oriented databases, and interaction design.

In the 2010s, he taught urban planning and smart cities at ESIEE and Bordeaux INP, connecting his research in urban logistics with educational programs.

Since 2018, Baudel has taught a course on Scientific Integrity, Research Ethics, and Digital Ethics, offered as a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on the FUN platform.[18][19] The course is followed annually by thousands of students and professionals worldwide seeking to understand ethical debates surrounding information technologies and apply ethical principles to their scientific practice. The design and pedagogical approach of this course has been presented at several academic conferences, including the IC15 World Conference on Intellectual Capital.[20][21]

Professional activities

[edit]

Baudel has been active in the human-computer interaction research community. He served as co-president of the IHM 2002 conference and organized the 1st Input Research Workshop in April 2000. He has been a member of program committees for IHM conferences since 1997 and has served as a reviewer for SIGCHI and UIST conferences. He has been a regular member of the board of AFIHM (Association Francophone d'Interaction Homme-Machine) over the past 30 years.
