The Resident is a British hotel brand operating five hotels in London, Liverpool and Edinburgh. It is owned and operated by The Sirius Hotel Group, formerly Resident Hotels Ltd, a hotel management company majority-owned by the family office Mactaggart Family & Partners.[1][2]
History
[edit]Nadler Hotels was rebranded as The Resident in February 2020, under chief executive David JM Orr.[3] The Resident Covent Garden had opened in February 2019.[4]
In 2020, Cannon Capital Developments and Michael Laird Architects lodged plans to convert Meldrum House, a former HM Revenue & Customs office on Drumsheugh Gardens in Edinburgh, into a hotel. The building's concrete cladding had been spalling and its north elevations covered in protective netting; the architects said refurbishment was less disruptive and costly than demolition.[5][6] Mactaggart Family & Partners bought the building in 2021.[7]
In June 2022 the company secured a £22 million loan from NatWest towards the £50 million Edinburgh conversion.[2][8]
In June 2024 the City of London granted planning permission for The Resident Farringdon, a 128-room hotel at 1–8 Long Lane designed by EPR Architects.[9]
The Resident Edinburgh opened in late 2024 with 164 rooms, the brand's first property outside England.[3][10] The conversion retained the original building frame, which was reported to have avoided approximately 697 tonnes of carbon dioxide compared with demolition and rebuilding, and won the Gold Award in the Retrofit category at the 2025 Scottish Design Awards.[2][11]
In April 2024, Time Out reported that The Resident Covent Garden had taken first place among United Kingdom hotels in the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards.[12] Tripadvisor announced its 2026 Travellers' Choice Awards on 9 June 2026, based on reviews posted during 2025.[13] All five hotels under The Resident brand were recognised, with Covent Garden receiving a Travellers' Choice Best of the Best award, given to properties in the top 1% worldwide, and the hotels in Soho, Victoria, Liverpool and Edinburgh each receiving Travellers' Choice awards, given to the top 10% of listings.[14][15][16][17][18]
In March 2026, Resident Hotels rebranded its parent company as The Sirius Hotel Group, stating an intention to grow the portfolio to 31 hotels within six to ten years.[1][19]
