The Gap Uniting Church is a church of the Uniting Church in Australia located at 1050 Waterworks Road in The Gap, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The congregation was founded in 1873 as a Primitive Methodist church, and became part of the Uniting Church in Australia following the 1977 union of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational churches.

History

[edit]

Primitive Methodist origins (1873)

[edit]

A timber Primitive Methodist church opened on Waterworks Road on Sunday 25 May 1873, on land donated by early Gap settler Moses Adsett.[1][2] The church was administered by the Corporation of the Primitive Methodist Connexion from 1898.[3] According to the Queensland Religious Places database, the church grounds include a cemetery considered a rare surviving example of a Methodist church cemetery in Queensland.[3]

New brick church (1960)

[edit]

As the congregation grew with post-war residential development in The Gap, a foundation stone for a new brick church was laid on 2 October 1960 by the Reverend Dr Robert William Fulcher, replacing the original timber building.[4]

Union with the Uniting Church (1977)

[edit]

Following the amalgamation of the Methodist Church into the Uniting Church in Australia in 1977, the congregation became present-day The Gap Uniting Church.[5]

Auditorium (2001)

[edit]

On 15 September 2001, a new auditorium at the church was dedicated by the Reverend Dr Ray Reddicliffe, then Moderator of the Queensland Synod of the Uniting Church in Australia.[5][6]
