The Eastern is a 2,200-capacity music venue and event space located in the Reynoldstown neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. Opened in September 2021, the 37,000-square-foot multi-level venue is located within the Atlanta Dairies redevelopment project on Memorial Drive.[1] The venue is operated as a joint venture between the local promoter Zero Mile Presents and global live entertainment promoter AEG Presents. It primarily hosts touring contemporary musical acts, spanning genres such as alternative rock, hip-hop, electronic music, and country.[2]
History
[edit]The Eastern was conceived in 2016 by Zero Mile Presents founders Scott Orvold and Alan Sher. In February 2019, Zero Mile partnered with AEG Presents to expand their promotional footprint in the Southeastern United States, leading to the joint development of the venue as a flagship music hall within the surrounding commercial district. Groundbreaking for the facility began in the fall of 2019.[3]
The venue is built on land historically occupied by the Atlanta Dairies cooperative, which processed dairy products at the site from 1945 until its closure in the early 2000s. The site was subsequently repurposed as an adaptive-reuse commercial, dining, and residential district located directly off the Eastside Trail of the Atlanta BeltLine.
After construction and scheduling delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the postponement of scheduled inaugural performances by the band Bright Eyes, The Eastern officially opened on September 1, 2021, with a headline performance by Atlanta hip-hop artist Big Boi.[3]
Architecture and facilities
[edit]The Eastern is a ground-up steel and masonry construction designed by the global architectural firm Perkins & Will, who also planned the broader urban renewal of the Atlanta Dairies complex. The building's industrial aesthetic utilizes brickwork and exposed structural elements intended to match the architecture of the surrounding Reynoldstown neighborhood.
The interior features a multi-tiered floor plan designed with a fan-shaped main hall to maximize sightlines and bring patrons closer to the stage. The ground floor consists of a general admission viewing area, overlooked by a U-shaped multi-tiered balcony. The venue is acoustically treated with approximately 3,000 square feet of specialized sound-absorbing wall panels and acoustic spray foam to manage high decibel output within the concrete enclosure.[4]
A key feature of the facility is its 250-capacity open-air rooftop space, which includes a covered performance area, a secondary bar, a kitchen, and views overlooking the surrounding Atlanta Dairies courtyard.[2]
Notable events
[edit]The Eastern quickly integrated into the national touring network of mid-to-large capacity clubs. Following its grand opening, the venue has hosted prominent acts including Billie Eilish, Jack White, Thundercat, Khruangbin, Billy Strings, Tig Notaro, and RuPaul. The facility also functions as a host site for private corporate events, community functions, and regional arts showcases in the Atlanta metropolitan area.[1][4]
