Terry Waya (born 23 August 1961 in Benue State, Nigeria) is a Nigerian businessman, socialite and philanthropist.
Early life and education
[edit]Waya was born in Benue State, Nigeria. He studied at Kaduna State Polytechnic in Kaduna, Nigeria.[1]
Business
[edit]Waya's business empire started with his relationship with the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida while in Abuja.[1] He became a consultant for the company that built the Transcorp Hilton in the 1990s.[2] In an interview with the BBC, Waya is also said to have discovered banana island[3] in Nigeria and was involved in the partnership to develop the place.[4] He later diversified his assets across various sectors, including real estate, agriculture, hospitality, oil, and gas.[1] In 2019, he was appointed the chairman of the board of Elephant Group[5]
Activities
[edit]He was an active socialite in the early 2000s who was known for hosting parties attended by the wealthy elite[6][7] In 2001, he hosted a large 40th birthday party that attracted half of the Governors in Nigeria. This event held at Le Méridien Piccadilly in London and reached the ears of then-President Olusegun Obasanjo. who openly criticized the event.[8] After years away from public spotlight, Waya returned to the social scene when his son Kiddwaya participated in the Big Brother Naija show in 2020.[9] In 2020, his son disclosed that Mr. Waya bailed troubled former Governor Alamieyeseigha[10] This has earlier been reported by Sahara Reporters as "Unsuccessful"[11]In the 2019 Presidential elections, he served as an Advisory council member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women and Youths, pointing to his association with President Buhari[12] In 2021, Waya organized another large 60th birthday bash attended by former governors Orji Uzor Kalu and James Ibori.[13][14] This party has been publicly criticized as too extravagant[15]

Controversies
[edit]In November 2008, Waya was detained by the EFCC on allegations of extortion.[17] In december 2008, the State Security Service and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission disclosed to Sahara Reporters that Waya's arrest had nothing to do with extortion as reported by Nigerian media houses. The authorities confirmed that his arrest was due to the President Yaradua's desire to shut Waya down over his views on the disputed Presidential elections. He was released thereafter.[18]
In 2007, due to a property dispute after purchasing a property in London, Waya was fined £1.54 million in a confiscation order at the Southwark Crown Court, Waya appealed the judgement which was further reduced to £1.11 million. The case was moved to the supreme court. The UK Supreme Court reduced the order to £392,400. and ordered that his previously confiscated property be returned to him.[19] This has been reported by AllAfrica.com as an acquittal[20]
Personal life
[edit]Waya is the father of two sons, Kiddwaya and Tersoo Waya.[21]
