Tarun Chugh (born May 3, 1971) is an Indian politician and author from Punjab who serves as the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party since September 2020.[1] He served as the Vice Chairman of the Punjab Youth Development Board in the Government of Punjab[2][3] under Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, holding the rank of Minister of State from 2009 to 2011 and the status of Special Chief Secretary from 2011 to 2012.
He served twice as the National Secretary of the BJP under the leadership of National President Amit Shah.[4] Chugh has also previously served as Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party, Punjab. He is the national convener of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao,[5] a Government of India initiative focused on the education and empowerment of girls. He is also a National Executive Member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.[6]
Early life and background
[edit]Tarun Chugh was born on May 3, 1971, in Punjab, India. He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree from Guru Nanak Dev University[7] and an MBA from Mahatma Gandhi University. His father, Banarasi Das, was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).[8]
Political career
[edit]He started his career as a worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1978. In 1987, he joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and entered active politics. During the Ram Temple movement in 1990, he led a group from Amritsar to Ayodhya. After the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, he became more active in politics and came in contact with BJP leader Uma Bharti. He later became the district president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, and then the general secretary of the organization in Punjab.
Apart from this, he also served as the BJP secretary of Amritsar district and as a state executive member of ABVP. From 2000 to 2003, he was the state secretary of BJP Punjab, and in 2005, he was appointed as the head of the BJP Punjab State Training Cell. In 2012, he was given the responsibility of BJP's election in-charge for Jamnagar, Gujarat.
He served as the Vice Chairman of the Punjab Youth Development Board in the Punjab government. From 2009 to 2011, he held the rank of Minister of State, and from 2011 to 2012, he had the status of Special Chief Secretary.[9]
Tarun Chugh contested the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from the Amritsar Central assembly constituency in 2012 and 2017, but did not secure a seat in either election.
On 18 August 2014, he was appointed as the National Secretary of the party under the leadership of BJP President Amit Shah.[10] Tarun Chugh was appointed as the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in September 2020.[11] In November 2020, he was appointed as the State Incharge for the Bharatiya Janata Party's operations in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh,[12] and Telangana.[13] In September 2022, Tarun Chugh took on his second term as the BJP's State In-charge for Telangana. He was given the responsibility of in-charge for Andaman and Nicobar[14] and in-charge for Delhi. In 2020, he was also made the convener of the BJP's election management committee for the Delhi Assembly elections.
In January 2024, he was assigned the role of election in-charge for the BJP's Lok Sabha campaign in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.[15] In July 2024, Tarun Chugh was appointed as the BJP's State In-charge for Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. In 2024, Tarun Chugh was appointed as the national in-charge of the BJP's Scheduled Caste Morcha.[16]
Published books
[edit]Tarun Chugh wrote a book called Modi's Governance Triumph: Reshaping India's Path to Prosperity. The book talks about the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and how they have affected India. It focuses on programs like Digital India, Make in India, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The book also discusses the benefits, challenges, and debates related to these programs.
The book was released on August 17, 2024, in New Delhi. Home Minister Amit Shah[17][18] and Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy attended the event.[19] The book has been noted for its study of governance and policy during Modi's time as Prime Minister.
