Draft:Tan Pei Leng

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pei Leng Tan is a materials science researcher at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. Her work includes hydrogel-based cell culture, tissue engineering and cultivated meat research.[1] In 2023, she won Falling Walls Lab Singapore for a presentation on growing skin cells in microspheres for potential use in treating large burn wounds.[2]

Education and research

[edit]

Tan studied materials science and engineering at NTU as an undergraduate and later completed a PhD there.[3]

Her cultivated meat research at NTU has included the engineering of fat cells and the development of cell-culture scaffolds.[1] She co-authored a 2024 study on decellularized plant scaffolds used to culture porcine muscle and fat cells.[4] In 2025, she was the lead author of a review examining how mechanical properties of scaffolds could influence cell differentiation in cultivated meat production.[5]

Tan has also studied microspheres for skin-cell culture. A 2026 paper she authored described GelMA-alginate core-shell microspheres designed to hold fibroblasts and keratinocytes in separate compartments during co-culture.[6]

Recognition

[edit]

Tan received a Best Oral Presentation award at the 2022 Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society Asia-Pacific conference.[7] Her Falling Walls Lab Singapore win in 2023 led to her participation in the competition's global finale in Berlin.[2][8] In 2025, she won first place in the research translation pitching competition at the International Summit on Sustainable Protein for a presentation about cultivated meat research.[3]
