Themis Bazaka (Greek: Θέμις Μπαζάκα; born 3 March 1957) is a Greek actress of theatre, film and television. A leading figure of 1980s Greek cinema, she is known for Costas Ferris's Rembetiko (1983) and for Stone Years (1985), for which she received a special jury mention at the Venice Film Festival.[1][2]
Career
[edit]Bazaka was born in Thessaloniki on 3 March 1957.[3] She emerged as a leading figure of 1980s Greek cinema. Her performance in Rembetiko (1983), directed by Costas Ferris, brought her early recognition, and she went on to play the lead in Pantelis Voulgaris's Stone Years (1985).[2][4] Over the following decades she appeared in films including Quiet Days in August (1991), directed by Voulgaris and entered in competition at the 41st Berlin International Film Festival,[5] and Acropole (1996), and worked extensively on the Greek stage and in television.[3]
More recently she was cast in Bells, the first Greek-set feature by director Adam Christian Clark.[6]
Awards
[edit]Bazaka has been honoured several times at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, winning the supporting-actress award for Rembetiko and for The Acrobats of the Garden, and the lead-actress award for Stone Years.[7][2] At the 1985 Venice Film Festival, the jury gave her a special mention for her performance in Stone Years.[1]
