Sylvain “Sly” Raymond is a Montreal-based writer-producer with dual Swiss-Canadian citizenship. He co-wrote the feature film Capitaine [1]and wrote, hosted, and directed the Radio-Canada OHdio podcast Premiers Choix: une histoire de hockey, about the unique 20-year professional career of first-round draft pick Mathieu Chouinard, who played only 2 minutes and 43 seconds in the NHL[2]. Sly was a script consultant on Game of Death, which premiered at SXSW,[3] and co-founded SPASM, a genre film festival[4] where he executive produced the feature Le Chalet[5] and distributed more than 100 short films across Canada.[6]

Career

[edit]

Sly was born in Montreal, but lived most of his early life in the suburbs, where he attended the all-boys private school Collège Laval. He moved to Montreal to study film and communications at Collège André-Grasset before pursuing his studies at Université de Montréal, where he obtained an undergraduate degree in film studies, a specialized bachelor's degree in communications and political studies, as well as a master's degree in communications.[7]

It was during his film studies that he met Jarrett Mann and co-founded SPASM along with Gil Brousseau and Benoit Guérard. His main responsibilities revolved around communications and marketing, but he also hosted most of the festival's early years with his stand-up comedy duo, The Night Shift. As part of SPASM, he helped bring the festival from a one-night event to a three-week celebration of genre cinema made in Quebec. Sly also participated in the distribution of more than 100 short films across Canada and executive-produced the feature Le Chalet, in which he also played one of the lead roles. Le Chalet premiered at Les Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois in 2018.[8]

After SPASM, Sly moved on to become a communications and marketing executive at TELETOON Canada, where he oversaw content for FOX, Marvel, Disney, Lucasfilm, and DC. He also spent more than a decade as a creative and strategic director in the advertising world, winning multiple awards in Quebec, Canada, and abroad.[9]

Sly also published two novels, Yupster and Sara(h)bande. He also speedran the SNES racing game Top Gear on Twitch to raise mental health awareness, breaking into the worldwide Top 10 for the fastest time[10]. Sly also played one of the lead roles in Ninja Eliminator III: Guardian of the Dragon Medallion, directed by RKSS, which premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival.

Recently, Sly has concentrated his creative career on screenwriting, thanks to his role as a script consultant on Game of Death and his involvement with his original story Capitaine as co-writer. He's now working on his next feature script, J'aurais voulu naître fleur (I Wish I Had Been Born a Flower), with director and co-writer Laurence "Baz" Morais and producers Voyelles Films.[11]

Most of his specs have ranked in contests and competitions around the world, most notably at the Austin Film Festival.[12]

Personnal life

Sly is married to Cristina D'Arienzo.
