Syklea is a French biotechnology company based in Saint-Sulpice-et-Cameyrac, Gironde, that develops systems using microalgae for carbon dioxide capture and carbon valorisation.[1]The company’s work focuses on biological processes intended to convert captured carbon dioxide into compounds such as biomass, oxygen, fuels, or other molecules.[2]

The company is founded by Dr Pierre Calleja, a French researcher and entrepreneur who has worked on microalgae-based carbon capture and valorisation technologies.[3] Syklea has described its approach as using selected strains of microalgae and microorganisms in systems designed for industrial carbon treatment.

History

Carbon capture via microorganisms such as microalgae is a topic that had been researched for decades prior to the founding of Syklea, by many scientists including Dr Calleja himself[4].[5]

Syklea transitioned to a commercial company after a technical development in 2021 named the "No-Water Technology" in the carbon capture systems. This development has been able to change the previous model, which used a lot of water to cultivate microalgae. After the patent was created Syklea started developing technologies around it and designed their different systems.[6]

Development and operations

Syklea started developing the systems and technologies based on their research and patents.[7] In 2024, after signing with a new client related to the data centers industry, Syklea opened a branch in Vineland US with a laboratory.[8]

In April 2026, the company launched their industrial developing phase through an inauguration of the new laboratory in France, focused on strain selection and optimisation of its technologies.[8]

Syklea uses their technology through two processes, respectively specialized for private and industrial environments solutions.[9] This range includes; The URBAN'ALG used mainly indoor or enclosed spaces, to treat emissions in the air around it, using its bio-technical systems as well as the ALIUM serving as an industrial technology for large industries and factories that produce emission gases in large quantities.[10]

Microalgae-based operations

The systems used by Syklea to capture the carbon dioxide emissions is made up of different strains of microalgaes combined with cyanobacterias and other microorganisms. Through photosynthesis, the carbon is metabolized by the microalgae and cyanobacteria, then transformed into oxygen, treating emissions, and turned into other valuable compounds such as biomass, oils, biofuels or solvents.[11]

No-Water Technology

The No-Water Technology (NWT) comes after an effort of wanting to reduce the amount of water usage in order to cultivate the microorganisms.[2] "Water is one of the main limiting factors of microalgae based carbon capture systems. Traditional approaches rely on large volumes of liquid, open or semi-open systemps, and continuous water renewal[11]" The newly developed solution by Syklea uses low amounts of water to grow the microalgaes. The system operates by growing the microalgae on a solid matrix, nutrients are then delivered via micro-doses, whilst regulating the moisture levels.[3] This system minimizes water usage and contamination as well.  

Partnerships and international development

Data One partnership

In 2024 Syklea signed a new research partnership with Data One, a company that designs and manages data centers that prioritize sustainability. Syklea has been charged with the task of treating the emission gasses from the Data One’s data centers.[12]

During the April inauguration, representatives of Data One stated that Syklea were being evaluated for their technology in capturing carbon emissions and other pollutants.[8]

International operations

Through the partnership with Data One, Syklea opened a branch in Vineland US, with a laboratory. The headquarters remain in Saint-Sulpice-et-Cameyrac, France.[8]

In interviews, Dr Calleja stated the desire in opening branches in other territories and for expansion in areas such as the Middle East.[8]

Research and patents

Dr Calleja holds 40 scientific patents related to micro algae, carbon capture and revalorization of biomass. The different patents are in relation to biological processes which aim to cut down on water and energy consumption during industrial operations.[13]
