Swarat Chaudhuri (born 1979) is an Indian-American computer scientist. He is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin and a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. Chaudhuri's research lies at the intersection of programming languages, formal methods, and machine learning, with a focus on AI-aided program synthesis and theorem proving.[1] He was elected a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2025 for developing tools for reliable systems that connect formal methods with machine learning,[2] and in the same year received a Guggenheim Fellowship for work on AI systems for open-ended mathematical discovery.[3]

Education

Chaudhuri received a bachelor's degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 2001. He subsequently attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a PhD in computer science in 2007.[1] His doctoral work on "Logics and Algorithms for Software Model Checking" received the ACM SIGPLAN John C. Reynolds Doctoral Dissertation Award.[4]

Career and research

Chaudhuri has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania State University and Rice University. Currently, he is a professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin and also holds a Research Scientist position at Google DeepMind.

Chaudhuri's research combines formal reasoning with machine learning. His early work spanned software model checking, program analysis, and symbolic program synthesis. Subsequently, he worked on neurosymbolic AI, advocating the use of neurosymbolic programs as machine learning models[5] and developing multiple methods for neurally directed program synthesis. He has also applied these ideas to mathematics: his group released PutnamBench, a benchmark of formalized competition problems,[6] and at Google DeepMind he led the development of AlphaProof Nexus, a system for AI-driven formal proof search that produced machine-verified Lean proofs for nine previously open Erdős problems.[7]

Chaudhuri was a co-principal investigator of Understanding the World Through Code, an NSF Expeditions in Computing project on neurosymbolic programming.[8] He has served as program chair for the International Conference on Computer-Aided Verification (CAV) in 2016 and the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in 2024.[1]
