Studio Kafka Co., Ltd. (Japanese: 株式会社スタジオカフカ, Hepburn: Kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Kafuka) is a Japanese animation studio based in Nakano, Tokyo, founded in 2020 by former members of WIT Studio. It is a subsidiary of Twin Engine.[1]
History
[edit]Twin Engine announced the studio in March 2021 alongside a new original anime disc (OAD) project for Kore Yamazaki's manga The Ancient Magus' Bride, which had previously been animated by WIT Studio.[2] The studio was set up specifically to produce that project.
It was founded by producer Koichi Naruse, director Kazuaki Terasawa and character designer Takahiko Abiru, who had all worked together at WIT Studio and, before that, at Studio VOLN.[3][4] Naruse and Terasawa had been assigned to the new Ancient Magus' Bride project in 2020 and were encouraged to start their own company by Twin Engine representative director Kōji Yamamoto; the pair then approached Abiru, whose credits include character design on Vinland Saga.[3] Naruse, previously production desk on Sarazanmai at Lapin Track, became the company's representative director.[3][4]
According to Naruse, the company's name comes from Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore — a copy happened to be sitting nearby while the founders were discussing names — rather than from the writer Franz Kafka. He said the logo, a book inside a cooking pot, refers to hot pot gatherings the founders used to hold at Abiru's home, and to the idea of "cooking" a script into a finished work.[3] Terasawa described the studio's aim as careful, detailed screen composition rather than the heavily animated or cinematic house styles that were fashionable at the time.[3]
The studio was originally based in Higashi-Nakano;[4] by 2024 it had moved to the Sumitomo Fudosan Nakano Ekimae Building elsewhere in Nakano.[1]

[edit]Studio Kafka also animated the segment "Woke-Up-as-a-Girl Syndrome" (directed by Terasawa) for the 2025 anthology Tatsuki Fujimoto 17–26,[7] and served as animation producer, with EOTA, on the 2026 film Mononoke the Movie: Chapter 3 – Snake God.[10]
