Stoned Jean is a Turkish experimental rock project from İzmir, founded and led by musician Yusuf Gürfidan.[1] Its music has been associated with stoner rock, psychedelic rock, doom and experimental rock.[2][3]

The project released its debut EP, avant/ garde, in 2025.[4] Subsequent releases included a cover of Nico's "Innocent and Vain"[2] and "Mapushane Balladı", a collaboration with Turkish actor Levent Ülgen.[5]

Formation and avant/ garde

Stoned Jean was formed in İzmir by Yusuf Gürfidan in 2024. Gürfidan has said that he conceived the project as a way of combining spiritual poetry with stoner doom, with the intention of creating music with a meditative quality.[1] According to Gürfidan, the name "Stoned Jean" is a wordplay referring both to stonewashed denim and to the French given name Jean.[1]

The project's early material included "Livia the Countess". In a review of the track, Argentine publication Rock Fueguino associated its sound with stoner, progressive and classic rock, highlighting the role of the bass and the recording's organic production.[3]

Stoned Jean released the EP avant/ garde in February 2025. The record incorporated experimental and progressive rock elements and featured contributions from Cem Ölmez, Sertaç Karatepe, Adrian/Vayuljel, Ekrem Köse and Emre Altınsoy.[4]

2026 releases

In February 2026, Stoned Jean released a cover of "Innocent and Vain", originally recorded by Nico and John Cale.[6] Metalperver writer Korhan Tok discussed the recording in the context of stoner and psychedelic rock and doom, describing Stoned Jean as an experimental project.[2]

The recording was later included on the 2026 EP And It Covers for Y'all.[6]

In March 2026, Stoned Jean collaborated with actor Levent Ülgen on "Mapushane Balladı".[5] Inspired by Attilâ İlhan's poem of the same name, the recording incorporated theatrical narration and elements of dub, with Ülgen providing the vocal performance.[5]

MusicBrainz lists the release as credited to Stoned Jean featuring Levent Ülgen.[7]

Musical style

Stoned Jean's music has been associated with stoner rock, psychedelic rock, doom, progressive rock and experimental rock.[2][3] Rock Fueguino, reviewing "Livia the Countess", highlighted the bass as a central melodic element and commented on the recording's organic production.[3]

Gürfidan has described the use of field recordings and foley as part of the project's approach to creating narrative-driven music.[1] He has characterized Stoned Jean as a project intended to function as a narrative experience rather than as a conventional stoner or psychedelic rock band.[1]
