Stefano Bertelli is an Italian film director and animator. He directed the animated feature Spacetime Chronicles (2025).[1]
Career
[edit]Bertelli has directed music videos since 2002. He works in stop motion, with models built from paper cut and folded by hand.[2]
In 2021 his video for Frank Sinatra's "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" won a Webby Award in the Video & Film: Animation category.[3] In 2025 he made Don't Make It a Song for the band Camel Power Club, which competed at the Ottawa International Animation Festival the same year. The idea for Spacetime Chronicles came out of that video, and some of its images are used in the film.[4]
He runs the production company Seenfilm with Riccardo Orlandi.[1]
Spacetime Chronicles
[edit]Spacetime Chronicles is his first feature as director and writer, and runs 70 minutes.[1]
It premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2026, in the Contrechamp competition.[1] It was then shown at Anima Brussels, BAFICI, the Raindance Film Festival, the Galway Film Fleadh and the Fantasia International Film Festival, where it ran for the Satoshi Kon Award.[5] In September 2026 it played at the Étrange Festival in Paris.[6]
Urban Sales took the international sales rights at the Marché du Film in Cannes in 2026.[7]
Reception
[edit]Cineuropa wrote that a plainer screenplay would have made the film flow better, while crediting Bertelli with sustaining a sense of impending disaster.[8]
In Chaos Reign, Romain Le Vern called the film existential science fiction made entirely in low-poly paper stop motion. He wrote that the paper world is good to look at, and compared its dream material to Michel Gondry and Alain Resnais.[6]
Rolling Stone Italia called it an introspective odyssey made of paper.[9]
