Staged in Kuwait Productions (SIK) is a not-for-profit, English language, volunteer-run community theatre company and performance arts school based in Kuwait. The theatre regularly produces a number of musicals, pantomimes, improv shows, and other productions for various ages seasonally.[1][2]
History
[edit]In 1948, a group of Kuwait Oil Company employees began to perform plays in Al Ahmadi area, dubbing themselves the KUOCO Independent Players. In 1950, the KUOCO provided the group with two huts in which to put on their shows, which later came to be known as the Kuwait Little Theatre (KLT). The 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait led to the destruction of KLT, which was not cleared up until 1994 when volunteers were given permission to enter.[3] Former KLT member, Tim Waddell, went on to found SIK in October 2012, the same year that KLT ended due to poor management, budgeting issues, and asbestos found in the ceiling.[1][4]
The COVID-19 pandemic forced SIK into inactivity for 18 months, then started back up again in 2021.[5][3]
