Sporting Club Tenerife was a Spanish football club based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands. Founded on 21 November 1912, it was one of the leading football clubs in the early history of football in the Canary Islands. In August 1922, the club was reorganised as CD Tenerife, which inherited its players, ground, colours and trophies.[1][2]
History
[edit]Sporting Club Tenerife was founded on 21 November 1912 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It emerged from the Nivaria Sporting Club, which itself had been formed through the merger of Añaza and the Club Inglés. Juan Yanes Rodríguez was elected as the club's first president.[3][4]
One of the club's first major projects was the establishment of the Campo de Miraflores. Edmundo Caulfield acquired a plot of land in December 1912 and subsequently made it available to the club. The ground was completed in 1913 and was officially inaugurated during the May festivities that year.[5]
Regional championships
[edit]The club competed in the early Campeonato Regional de Canarias, which brought together the leading teams from Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The first championships of the period were organised before the establishment of a permanent regional football federation and are treated differently by historical sources.[6]
In the early championships attributed to Sporting Club Tenerife, the club was involved in finals in 1912 and 1913. Historical accounts associated with the club regard these two championships as victories of Sporting Club Tenerife, although they are not counted as official titles by RSSSF.[4][6]
The club then won three consecutive officially recognised Canary Islands championships. In 1913–14 it defeated Marino FC 1–0; in 1914–15 it defeated Marino 4–0; and in 1915–16 it defeated CD Porteño 2–0. These victories made Sporting Club Tenerife the dominant club of the regional championship during the middle of the 1910s.[6][5]

RSSSF records Sporting Club Tenerife as runner-up in the 1911–12 and 1912–13 regional finals, losing to Sporting Victoria 1–0 and 3–0 respectively. These early competitions are marked by RSSSF as unofficial.[6] Historical Tenerife sources nevertheless describe the club as having won championships in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in 1912 and 1913 in addition to its three recognised titles from 1914 to 1916.[4]
In 1916–17 Sporting Club Tenerife reached the regional final but lost 3–0 to Marino FC. The club was again runner-up in 1918–19, losing 2–1 to CD Gran Canaria.[6]
Tours of mainland Spain
[edit]In 1915, Sporting Club Tenerife undertook one of the earliest football tours from the Canary Islands to mainland Spain. The team played against Sevilla FC and Cádiz CF, recording victories in matches against both clubs according to historical accounts of the period.[4][3]
Reorganisation in 1922
[edit]Sporting Club Tenerife continued operating during the following years, although the club experienced serious financial difficulties. In July 1922, its board returned the keys of the Campo de Miraflores because it could no longer meet the rent. After the club was dissolved, efforts were made to establish a new organisation capable of continuing its football activities.[1][4]
On 8 August 1922, a new club was constituted under the name Club Deportivo Tenerife, with Mario García Cames as president. The new organisation continued the sporting tradition of Sporting Club Tenerife and retained its ground, players, colours, trophies and part of its administrative structure.[1][2]
The relationship between the 1912 club and modern CD Tenerife is therefore reflected differently in historical and official sources. CD Tenerife officially uses 8 August 1922 as its foundation date, while historical sources and sections of the club's own historical tradition trace its origins to Sporting Club Tenerife, founded in 1912.[1][2]
