"Splat Attack Podcast" is a podcast created and hosted by both Brett Wilson & Alex Nantz at its inception. Splat Attack first aired on August 11, 2021 on all podcast platforms and later premiered on YouTube on February 2, 2022.
Origins & About Splat Attack Podcast
[edit]’Splat Attack’’ was created and co-hosted by Alex Nantz & Brett Wilson. It is a podcast devoted to spreading the love and awareness of not just 90’s nostalgia but 90’s Nickelodeon. In 2020, Alex began conducting interviews with Nickelodeon celebrities via Instagram lives. Brett Wilson had written and illustrated his own book about Are You Afraid of the Dark? Brett was featured as a guest on several podcasts discussing various Nickelodeon TV shows and providing artwork to market with. Brett was then featured as a guest on one of Alex's Instagram Live interviews. Having met via social media and sharing a passion for Nickelodeon, they formed a quick friendship. They both had the idea to create a podcast to talk about Nickelodeon and take their audience back to "the slimed-filled past" as they called it.[1]The podcast began as audio-only, even though the podcast recordings were done on Zoom. Their second episode starting adding guests with friend of the podcast, Jasmine. The third episode featured their first celebrity guests with Robyn Ross Fifteen (TV series) and Christopher Lobban Welcome Freshmen This episode also featured their first segment at the end of the episode with each guest defending their fictional school from each of their shows. The duo began coming up with new segments and episode formats to add variety to the episodes. The podcast added a video element starting with the Are You Afraid of the Dark? (AYAOTD) 30th anniversary episode featuring members of the cast and crew. Episodes were released every other Wednesday at 9 am central time. The team then began to make smaller episodes which they called minisodes to have in between the main episodes. They started a Patreon account to offer bonus material in an effort to make funds to pay for all of the fees required to create the podcast. On Patreon, they would call their audience "Gakoids." The main audience on YouTube and Podcast Apps were called "Slimesters." On Patreon, the team would make full length episodes and began adding bonus minisodes. There is also a Bonfire page that supplies shirts and coffee mugs. November of 2023, Brett Wilson left the podcast to focus on his personal projects and future graphic novel. Alex Nantz is currently the head of the podcast along with his crew, Jorde Durden, Catherine “Cat” Jersey, Manny Oramas, and Kiley Eberhard. [2]
Adding to the Staff
[edit]New staff members were added to help the production workflow. First, as a guest on the seventh episode called “Favorite Halloween Episodes,” Jorde Durden, who at the time helped Brett with his AYAOTD book, joined the podcast as graphics designer & effects artist. On the nineteenth episode, “Going Galactic with Space Cases,” Catherine “Cat” Jersey was featured as a guest along with the Space Cases cast members. She returned as a guest for a handful of Patreon episodes before joining the staff as a writer in season 5 and co-host starting in season 6. Towards the end of the third season on the thirty sixth episode, “Weinerville Chanukah Special,” Brett invited Manny Oramas who got his attention by making guest appearances on other nostalgic podcasts. After the recording Brett invited Manny to come back for the season overview and invited him to join the staff. Alex’s friend Kiley Eberhard made her mark on the seventy-second episode, “45th Anniversary of Nickelodeon” with guest Geraldine Laybourne. The crew welcomed her as a staff member, and she helped set up live streams including a Figure It Out inspired style livestream called “Go Figure.”[3]

Seasons

[edit]Primordial Ooze: The idea for the podcast was that every season would have it's own theme and logo. Similar to how the logo for Nickelodeon was always orange with the word "Nickelodeon" at the center, yet the shape would change. This is how Brett envisioned the logo for Splat Attack. Each season it would be a splat and the same name, but the splat and colors and shape would change. A lot of the characters used in the late 80s and early 90s IDs and bumpers of Nickelodeon was the starting point for inspiration. The logo featured an orange splat with purple lettering for the name. Around the splat were various characters that were created by Joey Ahlbum. Under the logo would be the tag line "Taking It Back To The Slime Filled Past." The season started as audio only but then switched to video on the sixth episode. The overall lore for the podcast is that Brett & Alex found the old slime geyser from Nickelodeon Studios. They used the parts to build a Slime Tank. The Slime Tank was powered by nostalgia which would manifest in the form of slime. The slime is what powered the podcast. The duo would start underground. But as the podcast grew, and the nostalgia became stronger, they would eventually have to move out from underground and into the public view. This first season, the primordial ooze stage, the layout for the episodes would have a green slime background. It was a fairly dark green that would pulsate. An orange slime banner would rest along the top with the phrase "We're Taking It Back To The Slime Filled Past" within it. Along the border would be some of the characters used in the logo. The name would sit in the bottom left corner. In the center would be the Zoom screens with a black border that were used to conduct the interviews and discussions. For Halloween, the slime would be changed to a purple slime.

Season 2
[edit]Cutting Edge of Slime: Season 2 didn't see any dramatic changes in the layout. The pulsating slime for the background, the themed characters on the border, as well as the intros and outros virtually remained the same. The logo changed to a far more simplistic design with an orange splat and purple letter saying Splat Attack. The growth this season came from cementing the audio format and discussion topics. The closing segments also increased by adding Mona's Mailbag, Retro Replay, and Guess That Artifact.

Season 3
[edit]Slime Tank 1.0: This season saw some major changes visually for the show. Instead of the pulsating slime, the episodes would begin with big mechanical doors that open to reveal an empty black background. Green slime would drop from the top of the screen and would fill the screen. This season began the idea of setting a scene in an audio sense in addition to visual. The slime looked more watery and bubbly. There would be an underlying sound of bubbles throughout the episode. The border to the screen looked mechanical and digitally drawn. The animation appears to be inspired by Klasky Csupo. This season also introduced the segment Rename Game.

Season 4
[edit]Slime Tank 2.0: This season the design shifted heavily from the more 2D digital animation to a 3D computer generated aspect. This season the background featured was the slime engine room. The episode would open with a large vaulted door. It would open to reveal red and orange slime that was reminiscent of a lava lamp. The background audio had also changed. Still attempting to paint a scene for audiences listening, the bubbling sound effect was kept it. But due to a lot of feedback from listeners complaining about the bubbling sound from last season, the duo slowed the bubbling sound and lowered the pitch and volume to make it far less noticable. The pipes along the border were more 3D rendered with a small engine apparatus in the lower right corner of the screen. The episodes would end with the closing of the doors. This season saw the introduction of Collector's Corner and Wild Card. On the season finale, the storyline is the nostalgia was getting stronger with each new season due to new viewers that the engine began to overheat. The engine exploded throwing the pod crew out from their underground base onto the streets, within the public eye.

Season 5
[edit]Takin' It to the Streets: This season advanced the pod's narrative considerably to bigger plans. The logo had a major change. The design was far more urban with a pink slime and blue lettering. The episode would open with a closed blue garage door. It would open to reveal a green brick wall that was graffetii'd with paint splatters and some of the characters from Nickelodeon's bumpers in the late 80's and early 90's. The intro would still begin with the phrase "Kick It" that was used in some of the Nickelodeon bumpers. This season, instead of the design being a foot pushing a button that said "kick it," it was Brett & Alex jumping up into frame kicking towards the screen. The sound change this season was that of a busy street. Still the volume was kept very light. This season began to heavily feature Jorde's designs. The end card would reveal the camera pulling out of a manhole cover and would show what the team would call Slime Alley. The only new segment this season was "Splat or Fiction" which was featured on the "Beyond Belief" Halloween special.

Season 6
[edit]Under Construction: This season brought the biggest changes the podcast has yet faced. The hosting duties now fell solely onto Alex. The rest of the team who has worked mostly in the background has now become rotating co-hosts. The background was the set of Splat Attack Studios under construction. These designs were the last ones blueprinted by Brett. Jorde did all of the final rendering. The coloring was a combination of blue and yellow. The logo was a teal splat with orange lettering. The episodes would open with a yellow sign in the middle of the screen with the logo. Behind the yellow sign was a barricade of yellow caution tape. The tape would peel away to reveal a construction sight with the lighting system hanging from the ceiling, the logo painted on the wall, scaffolding, the slime tank, a cement mixer that was spilling orange slime, foot prints from where someone had walked through the orange slime, and the teams' signatures on the wall. A crane would raise the old Nickelodeon Studios sign to preview the topic of the episode. One of the close up shots would show the open entrance to the studio. The end card would show the back entrance completely that would have the spinning globe from the old Nickelodeon Studios, with Splat Attack Studios replacing the lettering. The background sounds were that of a construction site. The news segment this season "Name That Slime" which was featured on the 45 anniversary of Nickelodeon and "Tuned 'N."

Season 7
[edit]Splat Attack Studios: This season solidified the teams' design and duties. Behind the scenes they began to treat this more as a job and were looking for ways to grow their audience, their reach, and their network. The new and final design for the logo was created which is a purple splat with orange lettering. It was inspired by the classic splat logo but different enough to stand on it's own design. The show would open with a teaser for the episode. After the teaser, the "Kick It" would play. The footage of Brett & Alex was replaced with the entire team kicking towards the screen. The camera would pull back to reveal the footage was a projected screen at the top of Splat Attack Studios, which is a recolored design of the old Nickelodeon Studios complete with a slime geyser. After the title reveal, the camera would go down the hallway of Splat Attack studio which would feature brightly colored patterns reminiscent of the old studio. The camera would turn into a side office which was an homage to the old front desk of old studio. The desk was a mock up of the studio, the lights from last season hanging from the ceiling, the teams' signatures on the wall from last season, the new logo on the wall, the phrase "Let's Take The Gak Back! -TK" also on the wall which was a popular phrase by one of their big supporters Travis, and in small text on the wall is "Gerry Was Here" which is an homage to their interview with CEO Geraldine Laybourne. The episodes would end with the slime geyser rising up from the ground, shooting slime into the air, and a slime curtain would fall and would serve as a wipe to erase everything. The end card would like the old endings to various Nickelodeon TV shows with the globe circling in the foreground with the studio in the background. The phrase on Nickelodeon would be, "This episode was filmed at Nickelodeon Studios in Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida." The podcast ends by saying, "This episode was recorded at Splat Attack Studios, in virtual home studios, though none in Florida." The team felt the background noises were too distracting in previous seasons so all of the background noise was cut. Also tired of having to deal with copyrights from other musicians and YouTube pages, the team created original music with the assistance of Alex Hellenburg.

Season 8
[edit]Splat Attack Studios: This season took what was established from last season and built upon it. The introduction of their homage to Stick Stickly with their own character, Splat Stanly. He would serve as the cold open, the bumpers for the commercial break, and the wheel to determine what the closing segment would be. All of the designs remained the same. A new room was added to look like a boxing ring for all of the versus episodes.
