Soufiane Choubani (born 1984 in Casablanca) is a Moroccan-American teacher, international debate coach, author, and former anti-doping control officer.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Soufiane was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and later moved to the United States. He grew up in Franklin Township, New Jersey, and attended Franklin High School, where he competed on the school's Model United Nations team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Kean University and studied psychology at the Institut Libre Marie Haps in Brussels, Belgium.[1]
Career
[edit]After completing his studies, Soufiane returned to Morocco. In 2014, he established the Morocco Debate Association, the Moroccan-Youth Debate Camp, and the Moroccan National Debate Team.[2]
Under his leadership, the Moroccan National Debate Team became the first North African delegation to compete in major international circuits, including the World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC), the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC), and the African Schools Debating Championship.[3][4] He expanded these programs regionally, helping to establish the foundations for a similar competitive national debate system in Tunisia.[2]
Soufiane led subsequent iterations of the Moroccan delegation to competitive placements at global tournaments, including tournament appearances in Japan and Vietnam.[5][6][7] His teams later secured competitive records as top historical regional performers at the international schools championships.[8][9]
In 2024, Soufiane expanded his debate initiatives to Europe by founding the Poland Debate Academy. The academy trained and prepared the first student delegation representing Poland to compete at the WIDPSC, with three individual students qualifying for global final rounds in the Bristol, England.[10][11]
