Draft:Sophia Lamar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sophia Lamar is a Cuban-born American nightlife personality, model and actress based in New York City. Variety has described her as "a club and party host, Off-Broadway and independent film actress."[1] A figure in the city's club kid and electroclash scenes, she was one of four principal subjects of the documentary I Hate New York (2018), played Cristina Onassis in the Spanish television series Veneno in 2020, and in 2026 walked in Demna's Gucci Cruise 2027 show in Times Square.[2][3][4]

Early life

[edit]

Lamar was born in Havana, Cuba, and has been described as "a no-nonsense refugee from Castro's Cuba who began her reinvention as an avant-garde artist during NYC's punk heyday."[2] She has said she began working on the streets of Havana at the age of 13, and later held jobs in construction and at a guitar factory.[5]

In interviews she has described being arrested in Cuba for her gender presentation and having her head shaved, saying that "it was illegal to be transgender. It was illegal to wear make-up if you were a boy. It was illegal to have long hair."[6] She left Cuba at the age of 24, arriving first in Miami and afterwards living in Dallas and San Francisco, where she was active in the city's club and art communities, before settling in New York.[6]

Career

[edit]

Nightlife

[edit]

Lamar became known in New York through the Club Kids scene associated with promoter Michael Alig, and went on to host parties of her own.[6] By the early 2000s she was a fixture of the Williamsburg electroclash scene built around promoter Larry Tee; The Village Voice described her in 2002 as "the most glammed up of the hipster bunch" among the scene's regulars.[7] She was later associated with the DJ and promoter collective The Misshapes and the downtown scene subsequently described as indie sleaze.[5]

Twilo lawsuit

[edit]

In 2001 Lamar and Amanda Lepore, who had worked as dancers at the New York nightclub Twilo, brought a discrimination claim against the club after being dismissed. As reported by The Village Voice, they alleged that a manager had told them they were being replaced with "real" or "biological girls"; Lamar, who was dismissed in February 2000, noted that both had received pay increases three weeks beforehand.[8] Their lawyers argued that the dismissals violated the New York City Human Rights Law, which at that time did not explicitly cover gender identity; the Council amended it to do so in 2002.[8]

Modeling and fashion

[edit]

Lamar has modeled and appeared in editorial work for publications including Vanity Fair, Dazed and i-D, and was photographed by François Nars for a NARS book.[6] She walked in Shayne Oliver's spring 2018 Helmut Lang show during New York Fashion Week in September 2017.[6] She has since collaborated with designer Elena Velez on runway presentations.[5]

On May 16, 2026 Lamar walked in Gucci's Cruise 2027 show, Demna's Times Square presentation of his "GucciCore" collection, appearing — alongside Cindy Crawford, Paris Hilton and Anok Yai — in a high-slit black dress and fur coat; W described her in its report as an "indie film legend."[4]

Acting

[edit]

Lamar is one of four principal subjects of Gustavo Sánchez's documentary I Hate New York, filmed over a decade from 2007 and following her alongside Amanda Lepore, Chloe Dzubilo and T De Long as figures in the New York underground.[2] Executive produced by J. A. Bayona, the film premiered in 2018 and was acquired for international sales by Media Luna during the San Sebastián International Film Festival.[1]

In 2020 Lamar appeared in Veneno, the biographical series about Cristina Ortiz Rodríguez created by Los Javis for Atresplayer Premium, playing Cristina Onassis.[3] She has said she declined the part twice before accepting it, and that she has since turned down further transgender-specific roles to avoid being typecast.[5]

Personal life

[edit]

Lamar is a transgender woman. She has resisted defining her public persona in terms of gender, telling Dazed: "I present myself as Sophia Lamar. I don't wear my gender on my sleeve."[6]
