SonderMind is an American behavioral health company based in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 2014 by Mark Frank and Sean Boyd, the company connects patients with therapists and psychiatrists for virtual and in-person care and supports clinicians in its network with insurance credentialing and billing. The company raised a $150 million Series C round in 2021, valuing it at about $1.1 billion, and acquired three health-technology companies between 2021 and 2023. It reduced its workforce in December 2022 and January 2024. As of April 2025, SonderMind operated in all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. In November 2025, it made in-network psychiatric care available nationwide.
History
[edit]SonderMind was founded in 2014 by Mark Frank, a U.S. Army veteran, and Sean Boyd, a therapist.[1][2] Frank has said the company grew out of his own difficulty finding a therapist who had availability and accepted his insurance.[2] In April 2017 the company raised more than $850,000, following $205,000 raised the previous May.[2]
In May 2018, SonderMind raised a $2.5 million seed round led by Kickstart Seed Fund, with participation from Purple Arch Ventures, SpringTime Ventures, Service Provider Capital, and Lanoha Ventures.[3] It raised $27 million in April 2020 in a round led by General Catalyst, with participation from F-Prime Capital, Kickstart Seed Fund, and Diōko Ventures.[4] At the time, the company had about 500 providers on its platform and operated in Colorado, Arizona, and Texas.[4]
In July 2021, SonderMind raised $150 million in a Series C round co-led by Drive Capital and Premji Invest, bringing its total funding to $183 million and reaching a post-money valuation of roughly $1.1 billion.[5]
In December 2022, SonderMind laid off about 15% of its staff, roughly 50 employees.[6] In January 2024, it cut a further 17% of its workforce, again amounting to about 50 people.[7]
SonderMind completed its expansion into all 50 states and Washington, D.C., in April 2025, adding New York and Michigan.[8] At that point it worked with about 12,000 contracted clinicians and had roughly 300 full-time employees.[9] In November 2025, it made in-network psychiatric care available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.[10]
Acquisitions
[edit]SonderMind acquired three health-technology companies between 2021 and 2023.
In October 2021, SonderMind acquired Qntfy, a Virginia-based startup that used machine learning, wearable technology, and a mobile app to analyze data to support clinical treatment decision-making. Qntfy's founder, Glen Coppersmith, became SonderMind's chief data officer.[11]
In November 2022, the company purchased Total Brain, a self-monitoring and brain self-care assessment platform.[12][13]
In March 2023, shortly before Mindstrong ceased operations, SonderMind acquired the digital mental health company's technology assets, including its electronic health record system and clinical documentation and care-planning tools.[14]
Platform and services
[edit]SonderMind matches patients with mental health providers based on factors such as intake questionnaire responses, location, insurance coverage, and clinical needs.[15] It offers psychotherapy and psychiatric care both online and in person, and accepts major commercial payers, Medicare, Medicare Advantage and VA plans, as well as Medicaid in a few markets.[8]
SonderMind uses measurement-based care, collecting patient-reported outcome questionnaires before and after sessions to track progress during treatment.[16] The company participates in the behavioral health track of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' Advancing Chronic Care with Effective, Scalable Solutions (ACCESS) Model, a value-based care initiative.[17]
In 2025, SonderMind introduced a set of artificial intelligence tools for clinicians, including a feature that drafts clinical documentation after a session.[16] The company has said the tool reduces note-completion time by up to 80%.[16]
Leadership
[edit]As of April 2025[update], co-founder Mark Frank was the company's chief executive officer.[1] Glen Coppersmith joined as chief data officer in October 2021 when SonderMind acquired his company, Qntfy.[11] Douglas Newton, who had held leadership roles at SonderMind, was named chief medical officer of Rula Health in July 2024.[18]
Molly Bonakdarpour of Drive Capital joined the board following the 2021 Series C round.[5]
