Comment: This is a lightly reworded version of the original LLM-generated text. Merely rewording the existing LLM-generated text usually does not resolve the problem of LLM usage; please start over by removing all text from the draft (without removing any review templates). If you need general advice or formatting help, see Help:Your first article and Help:Referencing for beginners. It is typically easiest to write a short draft that summarizes the best sources with critical analysis of the subject that meet all the criteria in WP:42. Smartsteuer is a German online tax preparation service operated by smartsteuer GmbH, a company based in Hanover. It allows employees and self-employed taxpayers to prepare and submit German tax returns. The company is part of the Haufe Group.[1]
History
[edit]Smartsteuer launched its online tax service in 2010.[1] In 2012, Haufe-Lexware acquired a majority stake in the company.[2]
Haufe-Lexware's Quick Steuer software was already built on technology by Smartsteuer. Following the acquisition, the two products were merged.[2]
In 2018, Smartsteuer acquired Steuerbot, a Stuttgart-based company that developed mobile application for German tax returns. [3] In the same year, it began cooperating with ING in Germany on a service that allowed customers to prepare pre-filled tax returns through ING's online banking.[1]
By 2019, Smartsteuer was using machine learning to compare anonymized tax returns with the tax offices' assessments, in order to identify discrepancies and improve the software.[1]
In 2023, Haufe sold Steuerbot to the Berlin-based tax software company Taxfix, while Smartsteuer remained part of the Haufe Group.[4]
Service
[edit]Smartsteuer guides users through a series of questions about their income and deductible expenses. Users can import data already held by the tax authorities and carry over entries from the previous year. Before the tax return is filed, a plausibility check flags missing or inconsistent information.[5]
The service was initially developed for employees but was later expanded to support more complex cases. These include income from self-employment and rental property, business profit calculations and value-added tax returns.[5]
Smartsteuer is integrated with Lexware Office, Haufe's cloud accounting software. Users can transfer data from their income–expenditure statement (EÜR) and VAT return in Lexware Office directly to Smartsteuer.[6]
Reception
[edit]Heise tested Smartsteuer in 2023 using real tax cases involving employment, freelance work and retirement income. It reported that the program's calculations closely matched the corresponding tax assessments.[5]
In 2024, WirtschaftsWoche described Smartsteuer as a comprehensive solution, mentioning its support for self-employment and rental income.[7]
