Company Overview

Simpson Associates (Simpson Associates Information Services Limited) is a data transformation consultancy operating out of York, England, with expertise in data transformation, data governance and artificial intelligence across public and private sector. The company was founded in 1991 and have since partnered with various technology giants like Microsoft, Databricks, and IBM to provide state of the art data transformation services to organisations across the United Kingdom.[1] [2][3][4]

History

Founding and early years (1991–2000s)

In March 1991, John Simpson and Mark White founded Simpson Associates as an AS/400 consultancy. The company transitioned from an AS/400 consultancy to a business intelligence consultancy after adopting IBM Cognos software including Impromptu and PowerPlay tools for multi-dimensional analysis. In 1990s and 2000s, the organisation built BI solutions that worked in tandem with enterprise resource planning platforms like JD Edwards, System 21 and Infor..[3]

In October of 1997, the company was formally registered as Simpson Associates Information Services Limited in Wetherby. It's registered office was later moved to York.[5]

Expansion and Microsoft partnership (2000s–2010s)

In 2000s and 2010s, Microsoft scaled it's business intelligence and analytics services which allowed Simpson Associates to start delivering platforms and solutions built on Microsoft SQL server. Later on, Microsoft Azure cloud technologies became nucleus of the Simpson Associates service delivery across sectors.[1]

Management buyout and growth (2018–present)

Giles Horwood, Darren Moors, Rachel Hillman and Angeline Campbell completed a management buyout in July of 2018.[6]

The company kept growing and increased the number of employees from 35 to 71 between 2021 and 2023. In 2022, the company moved it's main office to the York city centre and opened up a second office in the heart of Sheffield.[1]

Moving on to October 2025, the company received secured private equity investment from Beech Tree Private Equity to support growth, strengthen capabilities in emerging technologies like agentic AI, and explore strategic acquisitions. Over 100 people were employed at the company at the time of investment.[6][7]

In March 2026, Simpson Associates received a £10,000 Get Exporting grant from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority via the Mayoral Investment Fund, with support from the City of York Council’s Business Growth Manager. This funding will help the company deliver its data consultancy services to International Markets.[2]

Services and Capabilities

Simpson Associates specialises in data consultancy services covering data strategy, data engineering, data analytics, artificial intelligence, data governance, data compliance, data security and data platforms.[1][2]

The company's data transformation services are built on platforms like Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Fabric. Simpson Associates also specialises in Databricks platforms as well, having delivered valuable solutions for British Heart Foundation. IBM Cognos Analytics and Planning Analytics services is another strong suit for the company that helps them deliver financial reporting and planning.[4]

Data governance services has been a big focus for Simpson Associates, the work includes advising organisations on data quality, compliance and security frameworks and establishing an understanding of responsible data use.[8] The company provides Microsoft Purview Implementation services to help organisations catalogue, classify and manage data assets.[9] Simpson Associates gives end-to-end data governance services that include design, delivery and managed services of data platforms for reporting, analytics and operational decision-making.[1][2]

Over the years, Simpson Associates has delivered data transformation and AI services for organisations across the public and private sector. Housebuilders, financial services firms, manufacturers and technology companies make up most of the private sector clients. While the public sector work includes central government departments, local authorities, healthcare bodies, charities and emergency services.[1][2]

The company has worked with over 65% of police forces across the UK.[10] In 2024, the company received the Microsoft Partner of the Year award in the Community Response category for its work building data platforms used by UK police forces to identify and protect vulnerable people.[11][12]

When it comes to AI, Simpson Associates has developed tools and programs for children's social care. The programs include visual mapping software to identify a child's support network from case records.[13]

TOEX Data Platform

Simpson Associates have been a technical delivery partner for the Tackling Organised Exploitation (TOEX) Programme. TOEX is a initiative coordinating police forces investigating organised exploitation across the UK. Simpson Associates helped TOEX develop an Azure-based data platform that combined local, regional and national datasets from multiple UK law enforcement agencies for the first time, alongside a Power BI analytics portal and AI capabilities including multi-language translation and audio transcription. This work formed the basis of the company’s 2024 Microsoft Partner of the Year award. [11][12]

Once the original platform was up and running, both companies started working on a capabilities environment, it is a secure Microsoft Azure platform loaded with 11 AI application for investigators at the frontline. These apps include translation tools, document analysis tools, geospatial mapping, audio transcription and automated data review. In March 2026, the capabilities environment had nearly 5,500 users across 43 police forces and had generated over £56 million.[14][15]

RedactXpert and Cleveland Police

RedactXpert is a document redaction tool developed with Azure AI services that uses AI to identify and redact personally identifiable information (PII). It was approved in 2024 by the National Police Chiefs’ Council and placed on the Police Digital Service Redaction Tool Framework. Cleveland Police deployed it to their force and reported a 50% reduction in Redaction process time after an 8-week trial period.[16][17]

HM Treasury – OSCAR

HM Treasury appointed Simpson Associates to manage and develop the Online System for Central Accounting and Reporting (OSCAR) in April 2025. OSCAR is a cross-government financial platform built on IBM technology, it is used by more than 2,000 public sector employees It supports departmental spending analysis and the production of the Whole of Government Accounts and Supply Estimates. As an IBM Gold Partner, Simpson Associates were appointed to cover managed services, user support and ongoing platform development.[18][4][19]

South Wales and Gwent Police

In May 2025, South Wales Police and Gwent Police awarded Simpson Associates a contract for their Joint Data Analytics Programme. It is a collaborative platform that integrates real-time operational data and supports data-led decision-making across both forces.[20][21]

Microsoft Partner of the Year

Simpson Associates was named the 2024 Microsoft Partner of the Year in the Community Response category within the Social Impact awards, selected from more than 4,700 nominations across over 100 countries. The award recognised the company’s work on the TOEX data platform for UK policing.[11][22][23]

Great Place To Work

Simpson Associates has been certified by Great Place to Work UK consistently since 2022 and has appeared on the UK’s Best Workplaces list for five consecutive years from 2022 to 2026. The company has also been named to on the UK’s Best Workplaces in Tech list in 2022 and 2024.[24][25]
