Siberian Wikipedia, also known as Ru-sib Wikipedia, was a short-lived and controversial Wikipedia created by Wikipedia user Yaroslav Zolotaryov in a fictious "Siberian" language. It was closed on September 19, 2007[1] and was deleted on October 16, 2007.[2] Copies of Siberian Wikipedia are archived.[3]
History
[edit]Siberian Wikipedia was a project by Yaroslav Zolotaryov on October 1, 2006. It was Wikipedia in an artificial "Siberian" language that he created. Ru-sib had around 4500 articles, although a large majority of them were year articles and articles of low quality, like the article for Denmark was written mostly in Belarusian, and articles that were extremely short, some with only 2 sentences.[1] In September of 2006, the Wikipedia article for Siberian Wikipedia was deleted in its second nomination.[4] In October 2, 2006, Zolotaryov removed the link for Russian Wikipedia in a "minor edit", where it was reverted and then reverted again.[1] During a discussion to delete ru-sib, Zolotaryov allegedly deleted votes that were for the closing of ru-sib.[1] The Siberian Wikipedia itself was closed on September 19, 2007 and was deleted on October 16, 2007.[2] A copy of ru-sib is archived.[3]
Controversies
[edit]Ru-sib's main mission was allegedly to pursue political agenda, and promoted ethnic hatred and obscenity. It would translate poems from authors like William Shakespeare and add profanities or obscenities. It was also seen as anti-Russian, as Zolotaryov removed the interwiki link for Russian Wikipedia and reverted attempts to restore it.[1] Only 1 chapter of a book mentions the so-called Siberian language, and there also seemed to be a "shady deal" between supporters of ru-sib and opposers of Moldovan Wikipedia as Zolotaryov said "Парни, Бонопарт повел войска! Надо поддержать румын!" on ru-sib Wikipedia, translating to "Lads, Bonopart is leading the troops! We ought to support the Romanians!"[1]
