Shoott is an American online marketplace for portrait photography founded in 2018 and headquartered in New York City. The company offers booked outdoor photo sessions through a network of independent photographers in 60 cities across the United States, and operates on a "pay-per-photo" model under which clients book sessions at no upfront cost and pay only for the images they choose to keep.[1][2]

History

[edit]

Shoott was launched in the summer of 2018 in New York City by Jennifer Tsay, Daniel Kaufman, and Kat Tchernavskikh, with Jennifer Yeh joining as a co-founder shortly afterward.[1] Tsay, who had previously worked in investment banking before pursuing creative work, has said the company was conceived as a way to provide reliable supplemental income to working photographers by aggregating demand for short-form portrait sessions at fixed outdoor locations.[1]

The company recorded approximately US$80,000 in revenue in its first year, reached breakeven in 2023, and reported US$10 million in revenue and close to US$1 million in profit in 2024, according to an interview with Tsay published by Entrepreneur.[1] CEO Jennifer Tsay was included in the 2021 Forbes Next 1000 list of small-business entrepreneurs.[3]

Business model

[edit]

Shoott operates a two-sided marketplace connecting clients with freelance photographers. Sessions are 30 minutes long and held at predetermined outdoor locations, typically public parks, with no sitting or booking fee. After each session, the client receives a proof gallery and can purchase individual photos starting at US$30 each, or the full gallery for a flat rate.[1] Photographers are independent contractors compensated under a minimum-per-hour guarantee plus commission on gallery sales.[1]

Operations

[edit]

As of 2025, Shoott operates in more than 60 U.S. cities and at more than 600 outdoor locations, working with approximately 750 freelance photographers and a staff of 12 full-time and 5 part-time employees.[1][4] The company has expanded its initial New York footprint to include cities such as Boston, Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles.[4]

Coverage and recognition

[edit]

During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in 2022, Shoott held photo sessions in Chinatown, Koreatown, and other AAPI neighborhoods in the New York metropolitan area, donating part of the proceeds to the nonprofit Stop AAPI Hate. The initiative was profiled by CBS News New York.[2][5] Shoott has also been featured in segments and roundups on national television and lifestyle media, including Today.[6]
