  • Comment: I don't see strong evidence for a pass as either an academic or a general pass. For academic, WP:NPROF, she has one highly cited paper, but that is a team effort so it's impact is less. Beyond that her citations are modest, and I see no indications of major awards here or in her CV. Shelley A. Wright is an American astrophysicist and Physics professor at University of California, San Diego. Wright is known for her work in optical and infrared astronomical instrumentation, experimental work in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) field, and studies in galaxy formation and evolution.

Education and early career

Wright received her Physics B.S. from UC Santa Cruz in 2001. She became interested in SETI shortly before that, when she met astrophysicists Frank Drake and Dan Werthimer at an astrobiology conference. Drake was later an advisor for Wright's undergraduate thesis work at the Lick Observatory in San Jose, California.[1] Wright was a Support Astronomer for the Issac Newton of Telescopes, Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in 2001 - 2002. She received her Astronomy Ph.D. from UCLA in 2008. Wright was awarded the NASA Hubble Postdoctoral Fellowship (2009-2012; UC Irvine)[2] for her observational studies in galaxy formation and evolution. Wright was previously a professor at the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics at University of Toronto (2012  2015), where she worked on NIROSETI.[3]

Research and career

Wright is an advocate for supporting the SETI and technosignature field and increasing national research interest and funding. In 2016, Wright testified on the state of SETI to the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology of the United States House of Representatives.[4] Wright leads NIROSETI and PANOSETI,[5]two optical and near-infrared programs at Lick Observatory.[6][7][8] Wright was awarded the SETI Institute Drake Award in 2022 in recognition of her career-long optical and infrared SETI work.[9] In 2022, NASA's Science Mission Directorate appointed Wright as one of the panel members of the Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Independent Study.[10]

Wright specializes in near-infrared cameras and integral field spectrographs that operate behind adaptive optics and uses them to study black holes[11] and galaxies 10 billion light years away.[12] Wright is among the list of women in leadership positions on astronomical instrumentation projects. Wright is the Principal Investigator of Liger, a future instrument for W. M. Keck Observatory adaptive optics.[13] Wright serves as the Project Scientist of IRIS, a planned first-light instrument for the Thirty Meter Telescope.[14]
